  Those are some good ideas. I am really bad with keys, but not because I lose them. Mostly because I forget to bring them with me, so they are almost always at home. I’ve definitely had to wait for my husband to get home before to be let in.

  My thing with keys is forgetting if I’ve locked the door and having to come back and check. Because I have left the door unlocked. I’ve even forgotten to close the door!

  If I sense that I’m in a distractable state of mind, then I say to something to myself while I’m locking the door like, “it’s a sunny Friday in March, and I have locked the door.” If I’m in a super distractable state, then I repeat this to myself until I’m at the sidewalk, to make sure it’s firmly lodged in my mind.

  I keep my keys in one of those trifold key wallets to enclose the keys so they don’t shred my coat pocket linings. I usually throw it down open onto the stool next to the door on my way in. I realized recently that if I close the keycase as I’m picking up my things to go out the door, I’m liable to just put it in my pocket without locking the door. So now I make sure not to fold it closed until I’ve locked the door.

  Sranan lea – hee! I my keys in the hand rule applies to when I leave the house as well.

  Bev – it’s a Hobo International wallet bought in sale at a Nordstrom Rack. It’s got a zippered coin pocket in the back and it holds a good amount without being huge.
