Cool Tools: Hermetus Bottle Opener and Sealer.

Levis at JC Penny – just cheap, or crap? | Ask MetaFilter. I didn’t know this but I’m not surprised: “TJ Maxx totally sells cheaply made just for them clothes under designer names that are carried in major dept stores (my cousin works designing a lot of this stuff).”

Bicycle Frame Handle by Walnut Studiolo — Kickstarter. A handle that sits low enough on the frame to make carrying a bicycle much easier. The time for this has passed but I’m keeping an eye on their site for when they become available. Via Swissmiss.

I love the idea of a bottle opener/sealer. I usually try to bring the smallest bottles to the local pints and purls, because I haven’t had much luck bringing the leftovers home (need more twist caps in my life apparently). This would be perfect for my needs!

the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in college, I had an admin job in a garment factory and learned about the kind of thing in the second link. Jones New York was one of our main contracts and we made both the real thing and the lower quality versions that were sold at bargain retailers like Winners (do you have that in the US? it’s like Marshall’s.)

Differences could be in detailing, fabric quality, construction techniques (example, seam binding vs. no seam binding) and even the quality standard of the stitching.

Stores like Winners gave the impression that the prices were lower because it was leftover stock, not that it was lower quality manufactured specificly for them.

Seanna Lee – I’m taken with that opener as well though I have to admit I rarely leave beer behind :)

Jen – Interesting! We don’t have Winners here but I’ve heard of it before. Thanks for the confirmation.

Megan, thanks for the info about the bottle opener/sealer. I just ordered one from Kauffman Mercantile, what a nice little selection they have. Can’t wait to try it!
