Father’s Day project for Holidash

Fathers Day car kit

My latest project is up over at Holidash! This time for Father’s Day, it’s a car kit full of useful things for your dad (or your favorite father) to keep in his glovebox. I’ve included things like a flashlight, pen, sunscreen, digital tire gauge, tissues, bandages, and disinfecting wipes. All stuff that will make dad into a well prepared superhero for any situation. I have full instructions on how to create the easy organizer with ideas on how to personalize it. I even provide the super dad logo if you’d like to use it.

I love that project. It looks like it would work well for carrying small things to the gym or for bathing supplies at a hotel.

Seanna Lea and Tina – Thank you both.

I have really been liking binding tapes as a way of finishing things. Turns out, I really hate hemming things. All of the recent skirts and slips I’ve made I’ve finished with bias tape and I’m really happy with how they’ve turned out.

Great car kit! Thanks for the good Father’s Day gift idea!

To heck with dad, that looks like a great kit just to have in any car. If you have small children, just slip in a plastic sandwich bag with a first aid kit in it. The plastic baggy will keep liquid creams from leaking all over the place and with help keep items from drying out (as they tend to do if kept in the car for a long time).

Haha, yeah, my dad is already a ready-for-anything superhero: his car has its own pair of scissors. I like the inspiration though.

Great gift idea. You could also add a small scissors, screw driver and a measuring tape. Maybe even some office supplies like small stapler and paper clips. Thanks for the idea!

That’s a great idea for organization, and its attractive while keeping the masculinity in the craft.

I have a question actually. My boyfriend’s next birthday is his 16th; and I want to make something special because he can then drive… so do you think it would be to “adult-ish” if I do something like this for his birthday? Thanks!

  • 21 megan // Sep 30, 2012 at 9:43 pm

Maia – My initial thought is that this would be a very practical present, but maybe not romantic unless you personalize it. If you wan to say “yay you can drive now!” but also personalize it I would definitely add his initials or a symbol of some kind — favorite band? high school logo? his twitter handle? a stylized silhouette? pop culture in joke?

Also, if you sew then great! If not you can absolutely use a basic bag or zipper pouch or dop kit and use iron-on options or freezer stencils to personalize it.

I keep one of these in my car and it’s been *so* great to have when my (dearly loved but) old car breaks down or throws an oil light at me. Knowing that I have a flash light, garbage bag and hand wipes has saved me hours of time. So, I hope that this gift might also save your boy and that he might think lovingly of you because of it!

Yes. I would love to make this too is there a tutorial anywhere now or has it been removed for some reason?

  • 34 Linda // Nov 9, 2015 at 9:21 pm

I made these for Christmas gifts a couple of years ago and wanted to make some again, but lost the instructions. An online search didn’t bring it up, but I did find it, finally, at the Internet Archive Way Back Machine. https://web.archive.org/web/20110615042756/http://news.holidash.com/2011/05/24/diy-fathers-day-gift/?
