Martin - I'm afraid I have not made bubble bath for a long time so I cannot answer your question. Try soapmaking forums, they are very informed. Best of luck!

Hi,

Some lush bubble bars don't use glycerine. My bubble bars are softer than Lush's bubble bars. What can I do to improve this?

Yours

If giving to pregnant women, it is a good idea to research what ingredients are safe first. I did this when buying some goodies from Lush for pregnant friends, who I thought might benefit from a nice hot bath to ease their aching muscles. Out of all the bath products they sell in store, I found about 2 that were definately safe for the duration of the pregnancy. Those were Butterball and Dorothy. Other things had a EO that was safe as the main fragrance, but had other EOs also, which were not. Their 'Therapy' massage bar is safe though, and I'm told may people massage it into the bump! Many EOs will not be safe during the first 4 months of pregnancy, but are ok after. Still, I wouldn't give it, unless I knew the person had looked into it and wanted that ingredient.

I'm looking at the ingredients on one of the Lush products. There seem to be a lot of foaming ages. SLS and Cocomide and Lauryl Betaine. Guess I will have to get some of these things and experiment. My bath bombs seem to fizz away very quickly, and I'm looking at some of the newer ones Lush have made, which seem to last ages, spinning and fizzing and making pretty patterns in the water!

I'm sure you could use vitamin E oil as a preservative, if you are worried about mould from glycerine. Lush don't seem to list it as an ingredient on bubble bars or ballistics, and certainly I didn't need any last time I made bath bombs. I used witch hazel to spritz, when I wanted to make it stick together more.

Do not give out bath products as gifts if you are not well trained in aromatherapy you can make others really sick. Especially do not give them to pregnant women. Just thought I would mention it since you can really hurt others if you are not aware of the correct percentages of oils to use.

The reason the perfumes last longer with Lush products is that they add certain chemicals or natural agents to prolong the fragrance, fragrance oils and essential oils in and probably use the full percentage you can use on a body.
Do not put more than the specified amount of fragrance oil or essential oil in your product or you can get very ill....

Avoid the Sodium Laurel Sulfate guys...It is not good for allergies and itching. Sodium Laurel Sulfoacetate is much better for you.

Care about what you put on your skin. Studies show within 10 minutes what ever you use on your skin shows up in your bloodstream and liver. Use natural products to preserve health and avoid cancer....

Be careful with Orris root too. Research each product you put into your mix. Make sure you know what you are doing with essential oils they can be dangerous and should not be used while pregnant.

Swap Glycerine with Cocamide DEA, and add a teaspoon of ORRIS ROOT (powdered) which aids in holding scent.

I tried making these a few different times and mine never harden. They crumble every time. I've even added as much as 1/2 cup of glycerin to a batch and it still crumbles! It just will not get hard. What am I doing wrong?

Hi I found your site very informative. I am making bath fizzies with natural essential oils and find they lose their scent within the first 30 seconds in the bath water. Why do the Lush fizzies hold their scent for a full 20 minute bath plus the fragrance stays on your skin for the day. Are they using an alcohol based perfume or are there natural perfumes available that will hold their scent that long?

Megan have you ever experienced mold?
I am so excited about this recipe. I am hoping to make a couple of batches with different colors to make the swirl. Has anyone done that yet?

You are a doll! Thanks so much for sharing your recipe with the rest of the world! I love Lush, but its way too expensive, so finding your blog was no coincidence! I'll have to see where I can find the ingredients here in Germany.

hey there
thanks for the neat recipe
i was wondering if you've tried out the list of things you've mentioned yet. cocamide-DEA is an ingredient that is found in many shampoo, hair products, and bubble baths as well. it helps create bubbles and foam consistency; however, it's been mentioned by several sources that it may become a carcinogen when mixed when certain fragrances. do you know much about this ingredient as well? thanks a bunch! (its not for me btw, its for my girlfriend =)

I'm trying to figure out if its worth it to make my own... =)

I have found that by using less glycerine and some liquid foaming agent (like cocamide DEA) that you have a ton-o-bubbles. Just a thought.

I like lush and wish they had a recipe guide or somthin. when will you experiment with colors to see if the water turns a different color. Lush is too far to be driving to every three weeks. it will be easier to make my own products. :)

Hi, have been trying to make bubble bars made one that's really like "ma bar" but mine didn't dry out and they stayed squidgy unless I put them in the fridge. After I had moulded them they grew! Do you think I have used too much glycerine?

Brandy - The SLSetate that I bought was powdered and felt like baking soda. At the time it was the only one I found for sale, I think. It's been a few years!

Hi Megan!

I was wondering if you remember what type of sodium laurel sulfoacetate you used? I have been looking and I have found some to be coarse, fine, liquid etc. I'm confused! :) A little help?

Thanks!

Glycerine attracts moisture and too much will make your bars sweat.

You can get glycerin from soapmaking supply companies online for much cheaper than at Walmart etc.

I noticed that Lush lists perfume under their bubble bar ingredients alongside the essential oils. I wonder if that's why their scents are more stable. Or it could be the other ingredients they list in place of the glycerin in your recipe. I want to try these, and your recipe has fewer weird hard-to-find chemicals than the ingredient lists on the Lush website, so I'm going with yours. I'll use the Midsummer's Night fragrance oil I got from Coastal Scents because it smells like the bubble bath I used when I was a kid. If the scent hangs on longer than an essential oil, I'll let you know!

I used your recipe and was very happy.
My question to you is....how would i add ingrediants like fresh bananas?
Or....powered milk?
And can you subsitute corn starch for cream of tartar
Thank you Martha

You can usually find glycerin at drug stores. I got some at Walmart when I was making bubbles. It's in the pharmacy area, but I had to ask somebody to find exactly where it was cuz it's not a big seller and isn't in an obvious spot.
