Look, I know these have been around forever but our household just got a hold of one of these for the first time and we really like the Egg-Perfect egg timer. In case you are in the camp that has not yet encountered this I will fill you in: should you like some soft or medium or hard (but not too hard) boiled eggs this little gadget sits pan with them. As the temperature rises the outer edge of the Egg-Perfect changes color, it has markings for “soft/medium/hard” so you can pull your eggs when they are just right. Awesomeness. And more accurate than any time based method I’ve tried so far.
Update: I should add that the egg timer seems to work just as well if you steam your eggs instead of boiling them. I started steaming eggs after, I think, a Good Eats episode mentioned that the whites wouldn’t turn out as rubbery. So far so good.

I love that little thing, too! The most amazing about it is the distortion. When the timer is out of the water, its text looks distorted. When placed in the water is shows nice crisp straight letters!

I got one of those a year ago, really life-changing! It doesn’t seem to matter how you boil the water, as long as it goes in the same time as the eggs…

How do I not know about this?! Ordering one now!!

I don’t make hard boiled eggs very often, so I usually go to Smitten Kitchen’s tutorial on it. It feels silly to look up instructions though for something so basic!

my mil bought this for me as a joke stocking stuffer the year i called her to ask her how to boil eggs (i meant the time, not the process). she thought she was being funny. little did she know it was one of the most useful things she has given me. we now use it everytime we cook eggs. it is WONDERFUL!

Seanna Lea – I used to follow a recipe but in the mornings I could never remember if it was supposed to be 7 minutes? 10? 12? As long as I remember to keep my eye on this the eggs are perfect.

Yep…after keeping house for 40 years, I was complaining to a friend about hard-boiling eggs, and she gave me one! Fabulous indeed (and probably a great ‘stocking stuffer’ or gift basket item for those setting out on their own.

I just started describing this to my husband and when I said “you put it in the water…”, he said “it starts changing color? Is it red?”
He had this growing up in the 70s! I’m now annoyed with him that he has known this existed for 30+ years and NEVER told me about it!
Thanks Megan!

Picked mine up at Williams Sonoma for $5. It’s a fabulous gadget especially when you consider how affordable eggs are. Added benefit is that now I can always whip up a batch of deviled eggs when there’s a potluck.

I have had one of these for years – it is genius. My husband has his system that he argues makes perfect eggs. He tries to convince me how simple it is and thinks this is a useless unitasker that clutters the drawer. But, I will never give it up.

Yup – wouldn’t be without mine. I have soft boiled eggs most mornings now, something I never would have been able to do solo.

This is one of my ALL-TIME favorite things in my kitchen! I’m not even sure I could boil an egg without it any more! :)

I picked up one of these at Target a while back and my mother, whom I was shopping with, teased me about it. But it’s perfect for doing soft boiled eggs, hard boiled are much easier to get right without using it but this helps make sure my yellow is yummy and runny while the white is nice and firm!
