Worked on my Uncle’s cattle farm for a couple of summers. Real eye-opener to the beef industry! He also had two horses and a donkey. They were so sweet and would just sleep in the shade for most of the day.

The closest thing I had to a farm visit was a little place near Coos Bay, OR where my Great Aunt Norie and Uncle Al had a few cows. They also had a huge barn with hay bales we would swing from ropes and land in. It seemed like such a farm to a girl used to Navy bases. :)

When i was 8 my parents decided to move away from the city and buy a farm. too bad they knew nothing about farming. For the next five years we kept chickens and rabbits as pets. no one was eaten, and I grew up with many furry and feathered playmates.

I grew up next to an apple farm. Does that count? And my grandfathers home was called ‘the farm’ though there were no animals on it anymore by the time I was born.

What a lovely prize!! I grew up on farms so I guess the answer would be yes. We moved a lot and almost always to a farm setting – we had a dairy farm, pig, beef cattle, goats (for milk) and horses. I must say the horses were my favourite although baby pigs are probably the cutest little critters out there :-)

My older brother and sister were born on my parents’ farm in Missouri (I used to joke that, being the only one born in the hospital, I was the only one they *paid* for) and spent the first few years living there. He raised cattle (and the occasional wounded deer) and my greatest triumph during that time was naming the big red bull Oliver Boliver Butt after my favorite Dr. Seuss story.

We still have the farm, but nobody lives there full time. OBB is long gone but my niece keeps up the naming tradition with donkeys called “Cupcake” and “Dove Chocolates.” (Someone has a serious sweet tooth.)

Whew, just getting this comment in under the wire. I visited a farm in New Jersey when I was a young girl and marveled at the –to me– massive animals (cows, horses), enjoyed feeding them, all the unusual aromas associated with them, and just generally being out in the fresh air with seemingly nothing but miles of farm land as far as the eye could see. A nice peek into a whole other world from the suburbs.

My neighbors growing up had a farm–they kept too many cows and quite a few chickens. The first spring we lived there we’d just planted lilac bushes and the cows got out and stampeded one full moon night. Only one lilac survived.

We have a family friend who raises a whole bunch of Icelandic animals (sheep, chickens, horses, sheepdogs…). My parents adopted an Icelandic Sheepdog from her farm, because she wasn’t a very good sheepdog and kept chasing the chickens instead of herding the sheep. =D

I grew up on a farm – well, more like a homestead really. My family has always had big gardens, and at various points (but not all at once) dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, a pony named Jimmy Dean, and goats. The summer I was 12 we had 11 goats, counting all the babies. It was great.

Most of my dad’s family are farmers. My uncle still owns and works the dairy farm where he and my dad grew up. As a kid, I spent some time there, especially during the summers. I used to think it was fun helping my cousins with chores like feeding the calfs and moving hay around in the barns. In the late summer we’d roller skate in the half empty hay loft. In the evenings, after dinner, we’d play “farm baseball” where first base was the gas tank, second was somewhere behind the shed, third was the cat laying in the patch of grass near the driveway (unless he moved in which case it was the old boot…unless the dog was playing with it)…Lots of good memories.

Both of my parents grew up on farms, one dairy and the other apples and pears. The dairy farm was sold when my grandfather died, but I spent quite a bit of time on the fruit farm. No animals others than dogs and cats, but lots and lots of picking and ladder climbing and preserving.

My mom grew up on a farm and I spent every summer visiting my grandparents. There were chickens, sheep, hogs, a kitchen garden and spring house out back by the barn, and acres of crops. Also horses, farm cats, and fruit trees and berry bushes. The sky was pitch black at night except for the fireflys and stars.

I spent my weekends, holidays, and summers on a dairy farm in northern Wisconsin- “up north” as we say around here. My grandparents lived on the farm, and some of my fondest memories are from life on the farm. I love it up north- the air was fresh, the food tasted better, and are days were always full. I think my experience on the farm was a positive influence which has given me an appreciation for farmers, and a more authentic lifestyle.

It wasn’t so much a farm ( no animals), more of a large scale garden, that my grandparents had. The also had a small orchard and although all the fresh veggies were great, what impressed me most is the way my grandmother would whip up a batch of preserves with what she had harvested that morning before I even woke up. She had done it so many times she didn’t need a thermometer or even to particularly pay it much attention as it simmered on the stove.

I used to live in a small town, so I spent time visiting dairy farms. I also lived on a kibbutz for a few months…worked in the hatchery (baby chicks), but never spent much time with sheep.

Only kind of–my father’s parents had a farm, but it was small and used for hay…maybe. My mother’s parents had the remnants of a walnut orchard, and it feels more like a farm because of all the fruit trees (and the barn!) even though it’s on a large arterial. I love both places.

My sister’s husband had a farm when I was growing up, and we used to spend our summers there. We would have fun with the irrigation, riding tractors, and we would also help when the branded cattle. Branding is not so fun, but it’s less fun for the calves. Astonishingly, they would run off afterward, and a few minutes later it seemed as if they forgot what had happened.

My uncle owned a pig farm in Iowa, and we used to go there every summer. We didn’t do too much farming, other than ride in the tractor and puck fresh carrots from their garden. It was a ton of fun though!

Have you ever spent time on a farm?
I am a city girl. I have visited an Alpaca Farm and have stunning pictures of the girls (I didn’t like the fact they were bought and kept only for breeding – somehow I think they should be ale to do something else (not that giving birth is nothing but YOUR WHOLE LIFE – think of it – from the time you are thirteen until 53: – almost 30 children YIKES. I’ve gone to the LA County Fair and seen the milking exhibit. I am so citified I didn’t even own Uncle Milties Ant Farm (we were apartment dwellers growing up). I don’t belong to the FB farm game. I am so urbanized it’s not even funny, but I have been on farms briefly for holidays – I stayed with friends of friends in Iceland for a few days last summer, who had sheep and cows. Such a difference to have your breakfast milk come straight from the cow :)
And there was a famous childhood holiday on a farm in France where my sister and I were scared of everything except the cats…

I have chickens and they are better than TV. I will be attempting to learn how to shear this spring so I can take the fleece from one of my mom’s sheep and make the best burnt-toast-colored sweater.

After spending a year teaching English abroad, I putzed around Europe for a few months working on organic farms. After a summer spent scything hay, fitting wells with solar pumps, and tending to pampered French alpacas, I moved to New York. I love the city but miss being able to bike to the neighboring dairy farm when I didn’t want to buy milk at the supermarket.

I spent my whole adolescence working on a farm–or, technically, a winery, but they raised their own grapes, plus strawberries and asparagus. I started there when I was fourteen and didn’t stop until I was twenty!

Right now I live in the suburbs, but it’s a long-term goal to get back out into a more rural area and have a little farm of my own.

I’ve eyeballed Juniper Moon’s CSAs before, but they’ve always been a little out of my price range–this is an amazing opportunity!

The Welsh one was infinitely better–they took care of their animals better and were much nicer to us. The Scottish beer was very good though.

Spent time on a farm? I live in a small farming community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. lol I practically grew up on farms, not our own, but my friends’ families’. They were fun, and quite interesting. One of the most fun times I had was greasing the pins(?) in a tractor. The tractor had over 25 little knobs that needed greasing/oiling so my best friend and I had the owners manual trying to figure out where they all were. Some were way inside and our skinny arms could just barely get them, lol needless to say we had greasey old oil all over us, up to our shoulders, our faces from laying on the motor, etc. lol It was hilarious afterwards.

I love the idea of the Yarn CSA! I’m glad more people are getting involved in these things, and thank you for supporting it.

I lived in Ohio…that has to count for something. And I go to sheep and wool every year, so I see folks that have spent time on farms….

I’ve always wanted to spend time on a farm. My bf jokes that I was always meant to be a farm girl. Hopefully I will someday! I had never heard of yarn CSAs! That’s such a great idea!
