May Birthday Giveaway: CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life

CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life book cover

What’s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I’m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Todays giveaway is coming to you from the future. Well, sort of. Jessie Oleson, whom you might know as CakeSpy, has a book coming out later this year (late September is the most informed date I have heard, things change but this might not!) it’s called CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life and she is happy to send a copy to one lucky winner. Just, you know, in September when the book actually exists. CakeSpy, as if you don’t already know, is lover of all things sweet, purveyor of the history behind our favorite desserts, a most excellent illustrator with a certain favorite character (Cuppie, pictured here), has a column at Serious Eats, a real brick and mortar shop here in Seattle, and a rabble rouser when it comes to the question of Cake vs. Pie.

If you’d like to win a (future) copy of the CakeSpy book just lease a comment with this post, and if you’d like please answer this question: Are you Team Pie or Team Cake? I hereby publicly declare myself Team Cake, pies are great but cake has a power I cannot deny. Ok, you’ve got until Saturday, May 21st at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print, as always, applies. Good luck. Closed, thanks for entering!

    Pie.

    PIE

    OMG PIE!

    Or pudding.

Great, I am drooling now. Thanks.

  • 2 Amy // May 20, 2011 at 3:01 am

Cuppy rocks. Anyway, I’m team Key Lime Pie. If KLP didn’t exist I’d switch teams….er to cake that is.

  • 3 Alison // May 20, 2011 at 3:04 am

    Go Team Cake!

  • 4 Anna // May 20, 2011 at 3:10 am

    Cake – definitely!

  • 5 Amy I. // May 20, 2011 at 3:13 am

Cakespy is my favorite, I can’t wait for the book! Such a tough choice but I think cake would win for me. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • 6 Jen W. // May 20, 2011 at 3:15 am

    Team Cake!

  • 7 Sarah // May 20, 2011 at 3:26 am

I’m definitely team cake, unless we’re talking about my grandma’s lemon icebox pie. mmm!

  • 8 Katie // May 20, 2011 at 3:47 am

TEAM CAKE! Anything else is blasphemous. ;)

  • 9 Tina // May 20, 2011 at 3:47 am

Cake, unless the pie is strawberry rhubarb!

  • 10 Jamie G // May 20, 2011 at 4:03 am

    Team Cake FTW!!!

  • 11 Jodi // May 20, 2011 at 4:06 am

I think it depends on the kind of cake or pie. Peach or Raspberry pie? Always. But chocolate cake? YES. (Or lots of other kinds of cake)

  • 12 Melissa M. // May 20, 2011 at 4:09 am

    Team Cake!

  • 13 Karla // May 20, 2011 at 4:17 am

I am definitely Team Cake. I mean, I named my blog (which is not only about cake) after my favorite treat!

  • 14 Anne with an e // May 20, 2011 at 4:17 am

Team cake – because my dad is an amazing cake baker in his spare time. (So I would probably have to pass this along to him if I won….)

  • 15 Erin // May 20, 2011 at 4:19 am

    team pie!!

Must be a fruit pie though :)

I just love great pastry with something fresh and sweet.

  • 16 Lou // May 20, 2011 at 4:22 am

Team pie, only because of pumpkin!

  • 17 Megan P // May 20, 2011 at 4:22 am

    team cake!

  • 18 Linda // May 20, 2011 at 4:28 am

    Team Cake! More specifically….Team Cupcake!

  • 19 Heather B // May 20, 2011 at 4:32 am

    Team Cake for me!

  • 20 Laurie // May 20, 2011 at 4:33 am

yellow cake, otherwise pie. there are so many different delicious types of pie!

  • 21 Ruth Ann // May 20, 2011 at 4:35 am

Um…gee….I really have to choose….cause I like them both so much, especially when done well. And, thing is, overally I think I’m generally on Team Pie. But, the thing is, there are so many more ways to screw up pie than to screw up cake. Cake’s much more forgiving…and you don’t end up with rhubarb in your cake. Can I be on team Pike?

  • 22 Mikki // May 20, 2011 at 4:40 am

    team cake for sure!! :)

  • 23 Jessika // May 20, 2011 at 4:40 am

Those cartoons are so cute! But I am Team Cake! I rather eat cake (preferably cupcakes) than pie any day.

  • 24 Stephanie B // May 20, 2011 at 4:40 am

I’m totally Team Cake! Chocolate pie just pales in comparison to a rich chocolate cake! Although that strawberry rhubarb pie surprises me in its deliciousness every summer!

  • 25 Edamommy // May 20, 2011 at 4:44 am

    Totally team (cup)cake! ^_^

  • 26 sioux // May 20, 2011 at 4:46 am

    team cake!
    except on thanksgiving.

  • 27 darlene // May 20, 2011 at 5:02 am

Oh – I want this prize so badly. I’m definitely team cake, especially birthday cake with lots of sweet roses, coconut cake, big cupcakes!!!

  • 28 Kaitlin // May 20, 2011 at 5:03 am

Team Pie all the way! Frosting is just too sweet most of the time.

  • 29 Elisabeth // May 20, 2011 at 5:13 am

I’m a Cake girl – so many more options to chose from there!
Yay for this giveaway from the future! :-)

  • 30 Gweneth // May 20, 2011 at 5:14 am

team cake, team pie, so many sweets so little time

  • 31 Jessica // May 20, 2011 at 5:16 am

Gonna have to say Team Cake.

  • 32 Margaret // May 20, 2011 at 5:16 am

    Cake, cake, cake!

  • 33 Regina // May 20, 2011 at 5:23 am

That’s too tough a question. Cake has frosting, but pie has crust.

  • 34 Anna // May 20, 2011 at 5:23 am

    Mmm… cake!

  • 35 Abby // May 20, 2011 at 5:23 am

yummy, perfect thing to think about at 8.23am. I guess team pie if only for the fact that the I make pie way more often than cake. Mmmmmm.

  • 36 Lorri // May 20, 2011 at 5:24 am

    Pie, no doubt about it.

  • 37 Caroline // May 20, 2011 at 5:29 am

I thought I was going to be a team Caker as well, but then I had a slice of pie. Team Pie all the way!

  • 38 Kristin // May 20, 2011 at 5:32 am

I’m mostly team cake unless the opponent is lemon. Lemon beats all opposition and format.

  • 39 Elizabeth // May 20, 2011 at 5:32 am

Okay this is a great question. I was leaning toward team cake for the frosting but then it dawned on me all the varieties of pie. Ex: Chocolate, Shepard, Lemon,…. Nom, nom, nom ;) I love pie. GO TEAM PIE!

  • 40 Lauren // May 20, 2011 at 5:36 am

Team Cake! Of the cup and glazed varieties, please.

  • 41 Jamie // May 20, 2011 at 5:40 am

    Cake all the way!

    TEAM CAKE!!!

  • 43 Katie // May 20, 2011 at 5:48 am

I’m not one to pass up many sweets, but team pie has my vote!

  • 44 Michelle // May 20, 2011 at 5:51 am

really not sure I can vote between the two. i love them equally. but decorating cakes is a lot funner!

  • 45 Eliany // May 20, 2011 at 5:51 am

    I love both!

  • 46 Leslie // May 20, 2011 at 5:52 am

    Gimme a K
    Gimme an E

    Go Team Cake!!

  • 47 Meg // May 20, 2011 at 5:53 am

Team Pie, unless the cake is REALLY REALLY REALLY good! (Then, truthfully, I’m more Team Frosting than anything).

  • 48 Laura // May 20, 2011 at 5:55 am

    Team cake all the way!

both, chocolate cake and any kind of pie but lemon!

  • 60 Sarah // May 20, 2011 at 6:15 am

    Team chocolate cake!

  • 61 Jennie // May 20, 2011 at 6:17 am

Pies are nice and all, but I’m definitely on Team Cake.

  • 62 Pam Gotcher // May 20, 2011 at 6:17 am

Definitely team pie. But the crust has to be good and flakey (leaf lard and european butter) – In fact, I’m off to a class tonight in pie making!

  • 63 Dell // May 20, 2011 at 6:18 am

    Forever Team Cake

Team Cake – but hope to explore pies more in the future!

  • 67 Michelle // May 20, 2011 at 6:25 am

Team Pie, but I’m willing to change sides!

  • 68 Katy // May 20, 2011 at 6:28 am

    Cake! No question about it.

  • 72 Mika // May 20, 2011 at 6:34 am

    Now there’s a tough question… I love pie and cake equally. I don’t discriminate against sugar-filled goodness. Guess I can’t choose!

  • 73 prairiebirder // May 20, 2011 at 6:34 am

    Team Pie!

    Team Cake!

It’s so hard to decide, they are both so good, and I like to bake AND eat each kind!

Thanks again for the giveaway chance.

  • 76 chrissy // May 20, 2011 at 6:36 am

Team Cake!!!! It’s not even close. If there was a Team Cookies, that would be a tough call.

  • 77 Jody // May 20, 2011 at 6:36 am

Team cake. I am so team cake that I am all cake and no icing.

  • 78 Melissa // May 20, 2011 at 6:40 am

    Cake!

  • 79 Ecochic // May 20, 2011 at 6:40 am

Both teams??? I love pies, and I love cake. They both have their wonderful qualities!

  • 80 kayduh // May 20, 2011 at 6:41 am

Team cake! The only pies I like are basically cakes, like banana cream.

  • 81 Erin V // May 20, 2011 at 6:42 am

    Cake for sure!

  • 82 Katherine // May 20, 2011 at 6:45 am

Team CAKE! Although I occasionally find myself rooting for the other team, there’s pretty much no better dessert than a moist slab of pound cake with fresh strawberries.

  • 83 Heidi Devereaux // May 20, 2011 at 6:48 am

Team PIKE….Pie+cake…I love them both….it would be like choosing your favorite child..

    Team Pie for life!

  • 90 Rachael // May 20, 2011 at 7:07 am

As an incredibly picky eater, I’m Team Cake when it involves homemade cake without too many weird ingredients and with homemade frosting that doesn’t involve cream cheese, and I’m Team Pie as long as the filling has never seen the inside of a can. So, I guess I’m Team Homemade Dessert with Quality Ingredients. I sound insufferable.

  • 91 Patsy // May 20, 2011 at 7:07 am

    CAKE!

  • 92 Leslie // May 20, 2011 at 7:10 am

I am definitely team cake! There’s just so many different kinds of ways to use chocolate in a cake, and I haven’t found so many for pie. I love Cakespy!

    mmmmm…..pie!

  • 104 Elizabeth // May 20, 2011 at 7:38 am

I have always preferred cake. When I do eat pie, I prefer the ones that emulate cake, with sweeter crusts, custardy fillings and something special to decorate the top.

  • 105 stacey // May 20, 2011 at 7:41 am

Team cake, for sure! You can’t beat tiramisu, and carrot cake, and cheesecake, and cinnamon roll cake…

Hmmm…I kind of like that whole bake it in a cake thing- can I have a pecan or cherry pie baked into a chocolate cake? If I must choose one, though, I usually find it harder to resist cake. :)

Such a hard decisions-cake or pie! I choose by ingredient. There’s no way I’m passing by a coconut cream cake. On the other hand, I have a hard time resisting peach or blueberry pie a la mode-especially on a summer evening.

    Cheers!

Pie. But mostly because I prefer pies them over cakes. Cake is a pain, and pie is pretty much the only thing I dare to make without measuring ingredients. And I love a good lattice top. Yay pie!

  • 188 Anna // May 20, 2011 at 9:38 am

Team cake for sure! I like making cake. There is almost no type of cake I won’t eat. I love a good apple pie (without all that fake apple goop on top), but I’m not a big custard pie or most other fruit pie person. Yeah, cake, no question. Although if there were a team brownie, I’d totally go there.

  • 189 Susan // May 20, 2011 at 9:38 am

  • 203 Jen // May 20, 2011 at 9:59 am

I’d rather make a cake, but I’d rather eat a pie.

…Actually, I think I like making and eating both of them equally. But, laughably, my health conscious friends will happily chow down on pie and not go near cake, even often, calorically, they pack the same punch. So I choose pie, only because it’s more social.

  • 204 Erin // May 20, 2011 at 9:59 am

    Team Cake!

  • 216 Carey // May 20, 2011 at 10:17 am

I’m definitely Team Cake. CAKE! I mean, there’s no question, really.

    1. Cake can have chocolate frosting. Do you ever see chocolate frosting on pie? No. This is practically enough to close the case right there. BUT THERE’S MORE.

    2. Cake, especially cupcakes, can sometimes have cream filling. Ooooh, baby.

    3. You know how sometimes the sugar in a pie leaks through the crust and then carmelizes as it bakes and then you have that tooth-breaking bite that you just didn’t see coming? Cake will never do that to you. Cake is always kind and tender.

    4. Pie crust never has vanilla in it. This seems wrong, to me.

In conclusion, cake is best! Especially tender vanilla cake with cream filling and chocolate frosting.

    Wait.

    OH GOD.

My favorite cake is Boston Cream Pie.

    Nooooooooooooooooo!

How is that even a question people ask each other? As if CAKE is comparable to anything else? Seriously? It’s CAKE.

CAKE. You can make popsicles out of cake, you can make teeny cakes, HUGE cakes, cakes that look like Dr. Seuss, The Lord of the Rings and a million other things. Pie always looks like pie. Pie tastes fine. I like pie. But pie, cute teeny pie in a jar notwithstanding, is always pie and never looks like an armadillo or a book.

Snap! How can I be expected to choose!?! I’ll say cake, though if I never ate another pie I would cry everyday in misery. Dramatic but true. :p

  • 315 Gwen // May 20, 2011 at 3:11 pm

Team Cake! Although I did once bake a cake-in-a-pie, which was pretty awesome.

  • 316 Sophie // May 20, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Maybe I’ve just had too many mediocre cakes, but I’m team pie. However I am totally team Cakespy, your posts on serious eats every week inspire me so much and I would love to win your book!

  • 318 Cori // May 20, 2011 at 3:25 pm

  • 319 SK // May 20, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Absolutely Team Pie, no question! I’d rather have birthday pie over birthday cake, if that’s any indication. :)

  • 320 Dawn Richardson // May 20, 2011 at 3:38 pm

At heart, I’m team cobbler/brown betty/crumble. Team cake for dessert and team pie for breakfast!

  • 332 diane // May 20, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Apple without cinnamon and it is pie, or tarte tatin, but…………chocolate cake is divine. I have to say undecided.

  • 333 Crystal // May 20, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Team Pie! Nothing beats a perfectly flaky crust filled with delicious fruit.

  • 342 Kati // May 20, 2011 at 7:00 pm

I’m Team Pie only because pumpkin pie trumps all cake for me always.

  • 349 Amanda // May 20, 2011 at 7:30 pm

    Why choose? Pies in Cake!

  • 350 trefoil // May 20, 2011 at 7:35 pm

    Ohyesplease.

I’m afraid I’m team pie. Especially flaky crust, barely sweet fruit, whippy-cream topped pie…

  • 351 Michelle // May 20, 2011 at 7:44 pm

I can hardly make a decision. Love both pie crust and cake. But chocolate cake is definitely pulling team cake to first place.

Pie. And cookies. Although, I did make my future hubby a cookie cake pie ala CakeSpy for his birthday… and that was incredible!

  • 363 Well Dressed Cupcakes // May 20, 2011 at 8:33 pm

    I LOVE PIE!
Pie is something you really don’t get to eat very often but when you do…. it’s the best. FAvs? any kind! But strawberry rhubarb, peach crumb, I need to stop.

  • 364 jeanne // May 20, 2011 at 8:37 pm

    Team pie!

  • 365 Amanda // May 20, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Is team brownie a team? If not, then I’m with team pie. And cookies. Why am I not into cake? Is there something horribly wrong with me?

Team cake because it is fun to decorate!!!!

  • 379 Margi Hansen // May 20, 2011 at 10:37 pm

I rock at baking cake (and frosting)from scratch, while I suck at baking pie in all forms. So I’m team cake. However, if you offered me a piece of pie I wouldn’t refuse it

  • 380 scrapper al // May 20, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Team pie, but I have no problem crossing over to team cake. Thanks for the chance to win.

    Completely cake :D

  • 382 Jannie // May 20, 2011 at 10:59 pm

And OMG 10 years! Thats amazing. I discovered your site about 2 years ago. Have to read all your archives. :-) Congrats and keep writing!

  • 394 Jackie // May 21, 2011 at 7:51 am

I am team cake & pie… too hard to choose!

  • 395 Bee // May 21, 2011 at 7:55 am

Team Cake! Unless the pie is from Dangeriously Delicious Pies in D.C…. to die for!!!

  • 396 Elif // May 21, 2011 at 7:57 am

Team pie but it depends on the pie, on the cake…

  • 397 Natalie // May 21, 2011 at 8:09 am

I don’t know, pie is great, but I only like apple (well I hate to admit that is all I have ever tried) and cake usually has frosting which is the worst thing in the world. Can I pass up on this question? If I can’t I’ll have to go with Team Cake, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love cake just as much.

  • 398 bron // May 21, 2011 at 8:22 am

Team Cake, all the way. It’s got crumb, it’s got icing and it often involves chocolate.

Pie doesn’t even get a look-in! Plus, it usually involved either creme patisserie which I loathe, or fruit, which has no place in a pudding in my opinion.

  • 399 Rebecca // May 21, 2011 at 8:42 am

    team cake… without a doubt. Although I’ll never turn down a pie…

  • 400 Natalia // May 21, 2011 at 9:11 am

  • 403 Lorrie Walker // May 21, 2011 at 10:02 am

I will definitely say on this I am bi-sweet!!! I love cake & I love pie. (How could anyone choose one over the other?)

  • 404 cindyAz // May 21, 2011 at 10:16 am

That’s a piece of cake ~or~ is it easy as pie? Both.

  • 405 Liz // May 21, 2011 at 10:17 am

Team Pie! (cake is almost as delicious, but pie is more special, since I don’t make them as often)

  • 406 Paula // May 21, 2011 at 10:23 am

Cake for sure! Or really … icing/frosting! Pie does not have icing …

  • 407 Carrie // May 21, 2011 at 10:42 am

    Team cake.
