May Birthday Giveaway: lovely things from Joy the Baker

good stuff from Joy the Baker

What’s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I’m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today’s giveaway is from Joy the Baker, it’s a bunch of stuff she likes and thinks you might like too. When I asked her originally I thought her book (she’s gonna have a book coming out!) would be a great thing to giveaway, but it turns out the book is still a long ways off. But, being sweet as she is, she jumped in a offered to get together some good things, because she’s nice like that. She also hinted that there would be a few additional surprises included.

If you’d like to win the care package from Joy please leave a comment with this post, you have until 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20th to enter, the fine print applies. If you’d like something to mention please tell us: Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget? I have recently been introduced to the new style of can openers that don’t leave a sharp edge and refuse to look back (I am clumsy in the kitchen). Ok, good luck everybody! Closed! Thanks so much for entering.

may be i just love all the work.. :D

  • 2 Karate // May 19, 2011 at 2:07 am

I know it’s not really a gadget, but definitely the fork. Just a regular ol’ fork.

  • 3 Jenny // May 19, 2011 at 2:13 am

I’m a fan of our stick blender. My husband made us register for it and I thought he was a crazy boy. But it’s AMAZING.

  • 4 Mikki // May 19, 2011 at 2:14 am

I love the hand-held lemon squeezers which have a type of cup shape on one side with holes to catch the pips but allow the juice to go through. Hopefully my description is understandable! Really handy as it means no sieve and an extra dirty dish :) great giveaway. I hope I’m lucky for once!

  • 5 Kim // May 19, 2011 at 2:16 am

I love my micro-zester. Cheese, chocolate, carrots, etc. It grates everything and it’s fabulous!

  • 6 Sara // May 19, 2011 at 2:17 am

I have an old Blitzhacker chopper that I love. I think they were made in the 50s and this was my Mom’s.

  • 7 Little Miss S. // May 19, 2011 at 2:20 am

Yay, care package. Makes me smile already. I don’t really have a favourite gadget – I just love to use my kitchen.

  • 8 AnnaLyon // May 19, 2011 at 2:21 am

My favorite kitchen tool is my microplane grater, which is incredibly effective at citrus zesting, ginger grating (even frozen ginger), parmesan flaking, chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg grating… love it!

  • 9 Elana // May 19, 2011 at 2:35 am

Can’t live without my great knife, stick blender and a microplane. I can cook pretty much anything with those three!

  • 10 Caroline // May 19, 2011 at 2:37 am

Not a gadget per se – but I love my oven. I can survive without a stove, a microwave, a blender… But without my oven I’d be very unhappy.

  • 11 Melissa M. // May 19, 2011 at 2:38 am

I LOVE my immersion blender that cames with a chopper attachment and whisk. When I registered for it I never thought I would use it almost every day!

  • 12 Katherine Cook // May 19, 2011 at 2:43 am

I couldn’t live without my silpat baking mats.. they make everything easier!

  • 13 Melissa // May 19, 2011 at 2:50 am

I recently got a sample Knork in the mail to try out and I love it! I wash it immediately after each use so I can re-use it next meal. When I next find a good deal on a whole set, I am buying it.

  • 14 Elisabeth // May 19, 2011 at 2:50 am

A wine monkey?! Well should I be lucky enough to win THAT is definitely going to be my favourite kitchen gadget! :-)

Thank you for the lovely giveaway!

  • 15 Marie Biswell // May 19, 2011 at 2:56 am

My fav kitchen gadget is my 5mth old bubba – he makes a great supervisor!

  • 16 Julie B. // May 19, 2011 at 2:58 am

My mandoline has been a lifesaver and definitely my favorite gadget! By the way, those silver sprinkles are just dazzling and nearly hypnotic. I could stare at those all day!

  • 17 Amy // May 19, 2011 at 2:59 am

I’ve fallen in love with this mini-whisk thing. It almost looks like a tiny version of a cocktail strainer coil. Love!

  • 18 Kristine // May 19, 2011 at 3:04 am

I love a good reliable spatula.

  • 19 Emma // May 19, 2011 at 3:17 am

I’d have to say my fancy Global chef’s knife. Using a proper sharp knife after years of inferior ones was a revelation!

  • 20 Emily // May 19, 2011 at 3:24 am

I enjoy kitchen gadgets in general, but find wooden spoons and good knives essential.

  • 21 Kate // May 19, 2011 at 3:26 am

Microplane! You use it for so much more than you think you would.

  • 22 Katie // May 19, 2011 at 3:27 am

Growing up, we never used spatulas. They were a foreign concept for me. For my wedding I received some and now I am IN LOVE!

  • 23 bonnie // May 19, 2011 at 3:28 am

I just love my rice cooker. Since going on a gluten free diet, it makes cooking rice a breeze and it’s done right every single time. Don’t know how I lived without it!

  • 24 Katie // May 19, 2011 at 3:28 am

I love my immersion blender. It was an impulse buy, but I use it several times a week!

  • 25 Tanya // May 19, 2011 at 3:28 am

Favorite gadget? Probably my silicone spatulas – I seem to use them constantly

  • 26 Cristina // May 19, 2011 at 3:30 am

My silicone spatulas are indispensable. My kitchen scales also come in very handy for British recipes (could I borrow 50 grams of sugar, neighbor?) but I would have to say that my Microplane graters are my current favorite tools.

  • 27 Toni // May 19, 2011 at 3:31 am

I just got a new whisk the other day and I love it. It is a rainbow-colored silicone whisk and it just makes me happy to see it. And it looks so much nicer than my old one that took on an odd color after I put it through the dishwasher. Love Joy the Baker!!!

  • 28 Deborah // May 19, 2011 at 3:33 am

My baby blue kitchen aid mixer is my absolute favorite kitchen gadget. it is continually covered in powdered sugar!

  • 29 Lesley // May 19, 2011 at 3:37 am

Not reaaallly a gadget – but I just bought my first ‘nice’ knife ( a Shun 7″) and I wish I had invested in one years ago! I just want to be in the kitchen chopping things. :)

  • 30 Anna // May 19, 2011 at 3:40 am

    My Kitchen-Aid mixer. Most definitely.

  • 31 jean h // May 19, 2011 at 3:41 am

I love my “Wonder Cup” measuring cup. It is particularly great for any sticky, goopy ingredients like peanut butter or honey.

  • 32 magali // May 19, 2011 at 3:48 am

my favourite big “gadget” is my standing mixer. It’s from the 60′s and my boyfriend’s grandma gave it to me :)

  • 33 shannon // May 19, 2011 at 3:49 am

garlic press and food processor. what i was doing before i owned either of these things, i do not know.

  • 34 Laurie // May 19, 2011 at 3:49 am

Would die without my garlic mincer. Or eat less garlic. One of the two :)

  • 35 Jen // May 19, 2011 at 3:55 am

My favorite kitchen gadget is my boyfriend! He happily does all the chopping and meat prep. (Something about being all manly with a knife.)

  • 36 Tara // May 19, 2011 at 4:00 am

Happy Birthday Month!! My favorite kitchen gadget is my Kitchenaid mixer (and a good paring knife).

  • 37 Jillian // May 19, 2011 at 4:02 am

I love my silicone spatulas and Joy the Baker!

  • 38 Lauren // May 19, 2011 at 4:04 am

    love… joy….

My favourite gadget is definitely my milk frother!

  • 39 Elisabeth // May 19, 2011 at 4:04 am

It would have to be a tie between my mini food chopper (so I don’t have to pull out the food processor for small tasks) or this handy dandy jar popper thing I bought ( which is very useful for both my home canned goods and those jars you buy from the store that are so hard to omen).

  • 40 Alison // May 19, 2011 at 4:05 am

My garlic press is one of my faves.

  • 41 Tina // May 19, 2011 at 4:06 am

A set of tiny wisks, a small ice cream scoop for cookie dough and making meatballs, and my mandolin.

  • 42 Jamie G // May 19, 2011 at 4:06 am

I love Joy the Baker! My favorite kitchen item is my good sharp knife.

  • 43 Cassandra // May 19, 2011 at 4:09 am

I love my stick blender. It makes homemade soup even better!

  • 44 Jessica // May 19, 2011 at 4:09 am

I have been using the same kind of can opener (no sharp edges) for a couple of years now and I bring it with me when I move – even overseas!!

  • 45 Katie // May 19, 2011 at 4:11 am

Hi Joy, my favorite kitchen gadget is definitely my kitchenaid mixer – hands down, its not even a contest! :o)

  • 46 Nikta Pirouz // May 19, 2011 at 4:12 am

i dont have a lot of gadgets because i don’t have the money or space for them buuuut, my boyfriend just had to get 5 stitches in his thumb from a can opening mishap, so maybe I will be investing in a new can opener!

  • 47 Shanley // May 19, 2011 at 4:14 am

I don’t go in much for the gadgety kitchen gadgets (lord knows why you would need a special chopper thing for vegetables and another for fruit or nuts) — but i gotta say, the microplane is INDISPENSABLE. love it!!

  • 48 Lou // May 19, 2011 at 4:15 am

Mini spatulas. They are great for getting the last of food out of jars and for scraping down bowls of batter.

  • 49 Beth // May 19, 2011 at 4:15 am

My Kitchen-Aid mixer is my favorite gadget!

  • 50 Lacey // May 19, 2011 at 4:17 am

I love my lemon juicer (the kind you put half a lemon in and squash the living daylights out of it). I don’t use it everyday but it’s just so… Effective!

  • 51 Monica // May 19, 2011 at 4:20 am

    care package? yes please!!
    and…
cookie scoop. favorite and most used tool in the house.

  • 52 Mindi // May 19, 2011 at 4:21 am

My BF is a degreed chef and doesn’t really believe in single-purpose kitchen gadgets, but since I’ve started cooking with him I’ve learned to love the chef’s knife. There is *so much* you can do with a finely made and razor-sharp knife! I don’t know how I ever survived with my parent’s hand-me-downs!

  • 53 carrie // May 19, 2011 at 4:23 am

I’d like to learn how to make a good poached egg, but until then, I love my poach pods!

  • 54 Betty Anne // May 19, 2011 at 4:26 am

It would be a toss up between my tiny whisk (for salad dressing) and my garlic press.

  • 55 Megan P // May 19, 2011 at 4:27 am

Fun! I got a garlic slicer for christmas and we use it almost daily – no more smelly garlic hands!

  • 56 Kim // May 19, 2011 at 4:27 am

plain old kitchen shears are the more useful item in my kitchen.

    :)

  • 57 Anne with an e // May 19, 2011 at 4:31 am

Rubber spatulas, mostly because they come in fun colors.

  • 58 lauralynne // May 19, 2011 at 4:32 am

I have a trio of favorites: my microplane grater/zester, my mini flat whisk, and my silicone spatulas. I’m sure I could live without any of them, but my world would be a much less happy place.

  • 59 Melanie // May 19, 2011 at 4:33 am

Ooh, I have that kind of can opener!

My favorite new-ish gadget is the cookie scooper. I can’t believe I put off getting one for so long.

  • 60 RMJ // May 19, 2011 at 4:36 am

i need to check out that can opener.

    i love my immersion blender!

  • 61 Belle // May 19, 2011 at 4:36 am

I love my Kitchen-aid stand mixer since I bake often. Joy the Baker has been a huge inspiration for that, actually!

  • 62 Julianne // May 19, 2011 at 4:37 am

I must say mine is the mini spatulas I got for Christmas. I use them at least once a day.

  • 63 Marlena // May 19, 2011 at 4:37 am

I love all of my gadgets, but I’d have to say my favorite is my TofuXpress! It’s amazing! It’s a compact device that presses tofu into this perfect chewy block. No more Leaning Towers of Impending Disaster!

  • 64 Kerry // May 19, 2011 at 4:41 am

Those silver sprinkles look so fun! I think my favorite kitchen gadget is my one good Wusthoff knife that I use for everything.

  • 65 Elizabeth // May 19, 2011 at 4:42 am

We have a silly-looking plastic egg separator in the shape of a cartoon egg. I love it because my husband can separate his own eggs with it when I’m not home to make him breakfast.

  • 66 Tina // May 19, 2011 at 4:42 am

Who can resist a wine sock shaped like a monkey??

  • 67 Sandy // May 19, 2011 at 4:45 am

Love love love my rotisserie oven.

  • 68 Dawn // May 19, 2011 at 4:45 am

    My kitchen-aid mixer!

  • 69 Callie // May 19, 2011 at 4:48 am

This is going to sound awful, but my favorite kitchen gadget has to be my dishwasher. After not having one for so long, it’s my shining glory in the kitchen. I used to estimate how many dishes I would have to do based on the recipe- and many things never got made. Not anymore!

  • 70 Erin // May 19, 2011 at 4:49 am

I am a big fan of my can opener too, but I think my absolute favorite gadget is the spout you screw into your lemon that directs the juice AND strains out the seeds when you squeeze. Genius.

  • 71 Janine // May 19, 2011 at 4:50 am

Spatulas are definitely my favorite kitchen tool.

  • 72 Krista Vossler // May 19, 2011 at 4:54 am

my pastry blender! forget the food processor–i’d rather do things the old-fashioned way when it comes to pie crusts and biscuits.

  • 73 Ruth Ann // May 19, 2011 at 4:54 am

I have a pair of plyers that I keep in one of my kitchen drawers. It was originally my grandmother’s “kitchen plyers”. Terribly useful for cracking nuts, opening jars, moving pans out of the oven when you forget when your pot holders are (or your potholders got wet…which mine often seem to do…not sure why). Tons of other uses.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  • 74 Catherine // May 19, 2011 at 4:54 am

OMG! Those silver sprinkles are stunning………..I can only imagine the possibilities. Favorite kitchen gadget…….my BOOS block.

  • 75 darlene // May 19, 2011 at 4:56 am

Can’t live without my Pampered Chef measuring cups. So easy to measure ingredients with them.

  • 76 christene // May 19, 2011 at 4:56 am

yes, yes, the stick blender! i have a hand me down one from my sister, who doesn’t really cook, and i love it. stubbornly, it won’t die so that I can justify getting a fancy SS one, which is what i really want…someday! until then, it is my turmeric and curry stained plastic one i grab whenever i make soup!

  • 77 Sara // May 19, 2011 at 5:00 am

Cherry pitter- best single use gadget investment.

  • 78 Betsy // May 19, 2011 at 5:00 am

I used to be a sucker for every gadget known to man. I’ve gotten rid of most of the bad ones, but I still love my “wonder-cup”

  • 79 LeslieG // May 19, 2011 at 5:00 am

My favorite gadget is a stiff silicone spatula thingie. You can use it for everything — it stirs, it breaks things up, it removes batter, it withstands heat. How did I ever live without one? I’m now demanding that everything in my kitchen be multi-functional and do more than just one thing.

  • 80 Tom S. // May 19, 2011 at 5:01 am

I love my garlic mincer, it is the simplest tool that gives me the most enjoyment…and worst breath.

  • 81 N // May 19, 2011 at 5:02 am

Our opener that doesn’t leave sharp edges is a favorite of mine as well. not for the lack of sharp edges, but for the ability to re-lid the container and put it back in the fridge. Priceless in terms of keeping me from eating an entire can of black olives all at once…

  • 82 Sarah // May 19, 2011 at 5:05 am

My favorite gadget right now is my blender. Making baby food is so easy and so much cheaper than buying it!

  • 83 marta // May 19, 2011 at 5:06 am

joy the baker is incredible! and her recipe for grapefruit honey yoghurt scones blows my MIND!!!

one of my fave kitchen gadgets is also my can opener, as you squeeze it onto the top part of the can and it snaps into place, so you don’t have to squeeze it at all while you open the can!

  • 84 Anna // May 19, 2011 at 5:09 am

    egg slicer, definitely

  • 85 Mary // May 19, 2011 at 5:10 am

I’m a big fan of Joy the Baker!
I have been on a fresh lemon and lime juice kick-drinks, tacos, yoghurt-so my favorite gadget at the moment is a hand held citrus juicer. I was on a food processor bender because, like Sarah #72, I’m making lots of baby food at the moment too.

  • 86 jennybookworm // May 19, 2011 at 5:11 am

I love my stand mixer (nicknamed Big Red at my house) and my microplane which I use for garlic/any zest/ginger/nutmeg/chocolate…

  • 87 JH // May 19, 2011 at 5:13 am

More of an appliance but my KitchenAid stand mixer. I use it almost everyday! Plus I love my really deep nesting mixing bowls!

  • 88 Margaret // May 19, 2011 at 5:14 am

    Hands down my microplane zester.

  • 89 Emily // May 19, 2011 at 5:14 am

My favorite kitchen gadget is my orange KitchenAid mixer. It’s so lovely to not have to mix things by hand anymore!

  • 90 Sophie // May 19, 2011 at 5:15 am

This is a silly one and barely qualifies as a gadget, but tongs are my favorite! They are so versatile and can almost always pick up anything I need (unless of course it’s liquid, but then I could always pour the liquid into a container and pick that up with tongs, if I was so inclined). I just feel like kitchen tongs don’t get enough love. But anyway, I’m a huge joy the baker reader, love both your blogs and can’t wait for the book and hopefully care package :)

  • 91 ellen // May 19, 2011 at 5:15 am

I’m crazy about my beautiful pink Kitchen Aid mixer, but it’s the mandolin that gets the most frequent use.

  • 92 bryssy // May 19, 2011 at 5:15 am

Favorite gadget – pizza cutter! Cuts all the kids food quick and easy.

  • 93 Kristin // May 19, 2011 at 5:19 am

I’m not a huge gadget person, but I do really love my new grater. It’s pampered chef and it fold up. It’s for hard cheese and things like that…it works wonderfully!

  • 94 Michelle @ A Voracious Appetite // May 19, 2011 at 5:20 am

My favorite kitchen gadget is my food processor. Love that thing!

  • 95 Lise // May 19, 2011 at 5:22 am

Hard to choose! My good chef knife, I think.

  • 96 Meg // May 19, 2011 at 5:23 am

I love my immersion blender – which is funny because I was gifted one years ago and gave it away, thinking I’d never use it. Now I have another one and I use it all the time!

  • 97 Jennifer // May 19, 2011 at 5:23 am

My new favorite kitchen item is the red stiletto spoon holder my mom got me for my birthday. I laughed out loud when I opened it.

  • 98 Remmus // May 19, 2011 at 5:23 am

I love my garlic press. I needed something to buy at my friend’s Pampered Chef party and I got it on a whim. I didn’t realize how much I would use it. Love it!

  • 99 Marilyn // May 19, 2011 at 5:24 am

Does my stand mixer count? If not, definitely my offset spatula or the wide array of cookie cutters taking up space in my cupboards.

j dot marilyn dot evans at gmail dot com

  • 100 latenac // May 19, 2011 at 5:24 am

My spring loaded ice cream scoop. I’d really like one in every size to be honest since I use it for waffle batter, muffin batter and ice cream.

  • 101 kelly from neptune // May 19, 2011 at 5:24 am

My old school tin cheese grater. Fresh parm tastes so much better than pre-grated!

  • 102 Lorri // May 19, 2011 at 5:26 am

I love surprises. I have my share of gadgets but love using my mini-ice cream scoop for cookies.

  • 103 Angela // May 19, 2011 at 5:27 am

I have 2 coffee grinders, pretty cheap ones, one for coffee beans and one for spices. I have found buying cheap whole spices in bulk in the Mexican food isle and grinding them myself has pushed my cooking to the next level, no doubt.

  • 104 Lorrie Walker // May 19, 2011 at 5:27 am

My favorite is my mandolin. It makes food prep so fast and easy. Congratulations on 10 years! I would love to win the Joy the Baker favorites.

  • 105 shari // May 19, 2011 at 5:28 am

i LOVE my KitchenAid mixer, but my matryoshka measuring cups are too adorable not to come in a close second!

  • 106 Katy // May 19, 2011 at 5:29 am

I couldn’t live without my food processor… use it for everything!

  • 107 Megan // May 19, 2011 at 5:29 am

I love my little ice cream scoop for making cookies. Such a simple little thing that makes cookie-making so much easier.

  • 108 Carolyn // May 19, 2011 at 5:30 am

Two of my favorite blogs collaborating, yay! :)

My favorite kitchen gadget (at the moment) is my french press. Every day, I use my single-serve coffee maker, but I use the press on the weekends. Such a good cup of coffee!

  • 109 patricia // May 19, 2011 at 5:31 am

my microplane, but now that I finally have one I also have to say my dishwasher – it makes using kitchen gadgets so much easier!

  • 110 Lisa Lou // May 19, 2011 at 5:33 am

Oh my goodness I can’t live without my Kitchen Aid Stand mixer. I don’t know if ti is a true gadget but he is my BFF in the kitchen!

  • 111 wintor // May 19, 2011 at 5:34 am

Oh! I just “re-discovered” her and am so glad I did. Lately my favorite new kitchen toy has been my hand blender; it’s been so handy (heh) for making the morning smoothies!

  • 112 Emily // May 19, 2011 at 5:37 am

    I love my food processor.

  • 113 lmfny // May 19, 2011 at 5:37 am

My mandoline! Who would’ve thought? But I use it nearly every day.

  • 114 Karen LaVoy // May 19, 2011 at 5:38 am

My favorite item in the kitchen is our Keurig coffee maker; I think my kitchen shears probably count more as a gadget though and I use those things daily!

  • 115 Heather // May 19, 2011 at 5:38 am

I use my immersion blender a couple of times a week at least. I drink protein shakes after workouts and the powder resists stirring…but the stick blender makes everything perfect! I whip cream, blend soups, make dressing with it… Love that thing.

  • 116 Jackie P // May 19, 2011 at 5:38 am

    I love Joy!

  • 117 Lisa // May 19, 2011 at 5:38 am

I love all kitchen gadgets, but the thing I use the most would be my electric kettle. I don’t know how I lived without one. I’m a big tea drinker.

  • 118 Allison // May 19, 2011 at 5:39 am

I have a very make shift kitchen, so my ikea 365 knife is probably my favorite thing. It’s the only knife I own and it works really well for being under $5.

I do have a favorite kitchen gadget. Don’t laugh, it’s a fork. But! It’s a special fork. It’s got a thick handle on it, and it didn’t belong to any set. It was my mom’s fork, and we used it for mixing when we baked together. When I moved out, she gave it to me. And now that she’s passed, it means so much more because I have memories of us baking together and declaring “I need the mixing fork!”

My favorite kitchen gadget is electricity. For years I lived without it (on a boat) and did well, but now that I am back on land – the kitchenaid, the dishwasher, the electric coffee grinder, the internet. Cooking is new again!

  • 125 Jen // May 19, 2011 at 5:45 am

    Definitely my spatula!

My fave kitchen gadget has to be the spatula. Useful *and* fun to say.

  • 130 dru // May 19, 2011 at 5:52 am

I love to cook and bake, especially, love my kitchen aid mixer, my cuisinart (great for zucchini and carrots and apples for muffins or bread), my rice cooker (had for twenty years, and a smaller one before that) and of course, my kitchen scissonrs, garlic press, and microplane (zest). I always consider taking a pile of kitchen stuff with me on vacation to cook while there.

In the clumsy categories, I like the little things to separate egg whites from yolks. Not sure what they are called. No more fiddling with the shells trying to separate the two and droppings bits of shells in the white.

    The micro-planer for sure!

  • 137 Stephanie // May 19, 2011 at 5:57 am

My favorite kitchen gadget is probably my pizza slicer. I know it’s not the fanciest or the most complex, but I often find myself reaching in the dishwasher to wash it by hand so I can use it again. I eat and make homemade pizza a lot!

  • 148 kat // May 19, 2011 at 6:12 am

immersion blender, for sure! before having one i tried to make black bean soup by blending half in a blender & returning it to the pot…well, i’m still finding bits of black beans in various spots in my kitchen, 2 years later. an immersion blender saved me! to go with that, the crock pot that i use every week to make dahls, curries, and soups every weekend so i have lunch all week!

  • 149 Meadow // May 19, 2011 at 6:12 am

Oh, Joy is nice! My favorite kitchen gadget is this huge cloth covered plastic board my aunt gave me for pie crusts/pastry/bread. Nothing sticks to it. I think she got it for all of her female relatives at the flea market in Daytona Beach. I’m not complaining.

I hate mincing garlic, especially when I just want to make a quick improvised pasta dish or something. Now every time just as I’m groaning over having to mince garlic and starting to think about just not making whatever it was, I remember, hey, I have a garlic press!

My favorite kitchen gadget (to me that means non-electronic) is my lemon zester. It is shaped like a lemon slice on the bottom and has both microplane and zester bits. It edges out the Popener (Pope themed bottle opener) by a hair.

  • 168 Karen // May 19, 2011 at 6:22 am

The most gadget-y kitchen gadget I’ve recently adopted is those two-part adjustable measuring cups, where you move the inside of the cup to the proper line on the outside shell, fill it up, and push up the bottom to empty the ingredient into the bowl. Great for sticky things like honey and peanut butter.

I lovelovelove Joy the Baker, and all of these things! My favorite kitchen gadget is this thing called the “cupcake genius” sold by Avon. It has silicone nubs attached to a frame. You attach the frame to a muffin tin and it puts a hollow in the center of your cupcakes. It makes it ridiculously easy to fill them with ganache, cherries or creamy filling. It helps me impress folks!

  • 312 Julia // May 19, 2011 at 8:11 am

I got a silicone spatula (the whole thing is silicone) and it’s great– you never have to worry about it drying out or conducting heat or anything. I love wooden spoons, but for interacting with things like beets…I reach for the silicone spatula.

My favorite, wouldn’t live without kitchen gadget, is my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Mine is from the 1990, and you will have to pry that thing out of my cold, dead hands to take it away from me (granted, I was raised on a Kitchen Aid, my mom had hers for 40 years before she finally bought a new shiny red one)

  • 366 Kay // May 19, 2011 at 9:05 am

  • 371 Elisabeth G // May 19, 2011 at 9:09 am

My all time fave kitchen gadget is my parent’s wine opener. We call it the “Instrument of Death” because it looks really scary. It was given as a gift and no one used it for two years, then it took my mom months to master it’s use and teach the rest of the family. It is so fast and efficient (once you know what you’re doing.) Unfortunately it’s not made anymore but if I ever see one on eBay I will jump all over it!

I call it my Chinese cooking spoon because that’s where I discovered them. It’s a short handled spoon with a wide shallow spoon part.

I would die without my tangerine KitchenAid stand mixer. I made my parents promise that they would get one for me when we bought our first home. I used it for everything since we are very gadget limited right now.

  • 389 Emily // May 19, 2011 at 9:25 am

Before I moved to college my mom bought me a 3-in-1 mixer, immersion blender, food processor set that has served me so well. It’s going to be hard to get rid of when I finally upgrade it…

I second the fancy pants can opener – we got one for our three year old son for Christmas after he nearly cut his finger off with an open tin can, and it’s still going strong after six years!

  • 391 Jenn Bo // May 19, 2011 at 9:28 am

The most recent love is my citrus squeezer. It really does get all the juice out. Plus, I feel like I’m getting a little workout to my arms. =)

Don’t know if it counts as a gadget, but coffee machines with timers are pretty much the World’s Best Invention. Nothing like waking up and smelling coffee that’s already been brewed and is waiting there for you all nice and warm. Ahhhhhhhh.

I adore Joy the Baker! Almost as much as I love my enameled cast iron pot (Lodge, not Le Creuset, but it’s bright red which makes up for it) I guess it’s not a gadget, but it is the thing I use the most, and it makes me smile just looking at it!

  • 414 Lindsay // May 19, 2011 at 9:44 am

I love my can opener like the one you just got, but I would have said my mandolin slicer was my favorite thing. I would have until this past weekend when my husband “amputated” the tip of his finger on the damn thing. So now I guess it’s my garlic press. Love garlic, and this gets the most flavor out of each clove.

  • 644 Starlene // May 19, 2011 at 1:04 pm

my kitchenaid mixer or my le crueset dutch oven. if we’re talking smaller, microplaner for sure!

  • 645 Heidi // May 19, 2011 at 1:06 pm

My favorite gadget is probably my Kitchenaid. I got a brand new Tangerine colored one for my wedding!

  • 646 Lee//Portsmouth // May 19, 2011 at 1:10 pm

    My Mom’s old Mouli!
It’s a shredder grater, on the line of a Salad Master (except much smaller). When I was little (in age and girth) it was a favorite thing to turn the crank for lovely julienned carrots or beautifully thin cucumber slices! Yesterday’s food processor.

  • 647 Kathy // May 19, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Tough to choose , but I do love my microplane grater! Nice fine shreds with minimal effort. Also my mini-ice-cream-scooper for portioning out cookie dough. Where was that all my life?? I actually owned one for a couple of years and didn’t use it. I totally kicked myself when I realized how ingenious it was!

  • 652 Whitney Anne // May 19, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I have these beautiful deep ceramic bowls that I use every chance I get….perhaps a dish does not fall under the gadget category, but they certainly are handy.

  • 653 erica // May 19, 2011 at 1:18 pm

I’ll never get over that thing that slices apples in one awesome swoop. It’s pretty genius.

  • 654 Anne // May 19, 2011 at 1:19 pm

My favorite thing in the kitchen is a particular really really good knife. We have a tiny kitchen without storage so there aren’t many gadgets, but we did make room for a mandoline – it makes awesome french fries and super thin slices!

  • 655 Rae // May 19, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Although it’s a bit after-the-fact, I love my disposal. There’s nothing worse than having to throw everything in the trash, only to have it stinking in no time!

  • 656 Flora // May 19, 2011 at 1:21 pm

I like my garlic peeler. Not the fanciest thing on the planet, but somehow the most entertaining.

  • 657 Laura J // May 19, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I love my espresso maker. I make a latte almost every morning & its a great way to start the day

  • 658 Janelle // May 19, 2011 at 1:22 pm

My boyfriend. He’s a great sous chef, and always chops the garlic. I dont’ like how sticky it is.

If he doesn’t count, I’d have to go with tongs. I use them for everything, including getting things down out of high cupboards, and I am only 4’10″ and don’t always feel like getting out the step stool!

  • 659 Kristi // May 19, 2011 at 1:24 pm

My Foreman Grill – it’s so easy to use and makes awesome chicken.

  • 660 Natalie // May 19, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Kitchen gadget?! Oh, how you make me giggle. I am not very good in the kitchen. But, I guess that apple corer thing-a-ma-bob is pretty cool.

Yoikes.

  • 679 Megan B // May 19, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Garlic press and mandolin. I <3 garlic, and I <3 perfectly cut things.

  • 691 Robin J // May 19, 2011 at 2:32 pm

I bought one of those can openers from IKEA and had to watch an online video explaining how to use it. I do like it. It replaces a clunky 70s electric opener. Hurray for more counter space!

  • 692 Beth // May 19, 2011 at 2:34 pm

Thanks again. This looks like a great giveaway. My favorite kitchen gadgets are (it is too hard to pick just one) the slipat teflon mat for making cookies and our zojirushi rice cooker (which makes excellent steelcut oatmeal and couscous and of course rice).

  • 699 Shelley // May 19, 2011 at 2:46 pm

I love the stick blender I got for my b-day last year from a very dear friend. I make a lot of soups and it is a lifesaver. It’s also great for hot chocolate, smoothies and beating eggs.

I’d have to say my microplane grater. I love it so much that I’ve gifted it at least three times to various friends of mine. :)

  • 707 Aimless // May 19, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Gadget? Hmm… I could say that little egg timer you drop in with the eggs… but as cool as it is, it just isn’t versatile. I’ll have to go with my hands. ^_^ They can do everything from mixing and tenderizing (when it’s been a particularly bad day) to opening containers and creating interesting wall art. Plus they are always nearby and fix themselves when damaged!

  • 708 Elizabeth // May 19, 2011 at 3:08 pm

  • 709 Michelle // May 19, 2011 at 3:08 pm

  • 711 Sabrina // May 19, 2011 at 3:11 pm

My favorite gadget is my slap chop. It does an amazing job chopping everything to exactly the correct size I desire. And, it’s easy to clean!

  • 712 Julie // May 19, 2011 at 3:13 pm

When my fiance and I moved into our new apartment, I basically left the kitchen up to him, though I definitely questioned why the vacuum sealer was taking up precious counter space. He insisted that it would soon be an integral part of the cooking habits, and we’d need to keep it out. And of course, he was absolutely right–I find myself finding excuses to store and seal all kinds of packages and bags. (Now we just need to build a sous vide bath!)

    Thanks!

Love Joy the Baker, too. She’s so creative in the kitchen!

I think the can opener is the favorite gadget. It’s one handle and cuts on the outside of the can so there’s not slicing up your fingers on the lid. The Vitamix is also beloved.

  • 750 Sarah S // May 19, 2011 at 5:10 pm

If I have to pick only one, I would say kitchen shears and I really found great value when I had my son. They were great for cutting food into finger size pieces. I also love my micrograter and kitchen aid stand mixer. I would love to have Vitamix and the can opener you love but have been unable to identify a good one.

Stand mixer! We just got it, and I love it. We make all kinds of things in it. We’ve wanted one for years and we finally got one. :)

  • 776 Bubbles // May 19, 2011 at 6:10 pm

We moved from Texas to Minnesota and I wound up ditching my combo food processor/blender because it was huge and I wasn’t totally enamored of it, and I thought I didn’t really need it. Oh my god. I bought a new food processor as soon as I could. Hummus, salsa, and in the non-food world, our laundry detergent… (It makes grating the soap a breeze.) So nice to be back in the processing world. (Still don’t miss the blender, though.)

Thanks for this awesome blog :)

Ancient knife that’s been in the family for at least 3 generations. no idea how it’s survived all of the sharpenings & mendings, but it’s great for everything from cutting up chicken to chopping herbs.

  • 791 KimK // May 19, 2011 at 7:16 pm
