Not Martha

giveaway: Let’s Panic About Babies!

I want to give big congratulations to both Alice Bradley and Eden M. Kennedy because their book, Let’s Panic About Babies! How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant Who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy You Life, Liquefy Your Brain, and Finally Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being comes out today! I had the pleasure of meeting them both at the Broad Summit a few years ago where they announced they’d just gotten a book deal so it’s extra exciting to get to hold the book in my hands. They are both hilarious women who have written a hilarious book. The kind people at St. Martin’s Press have given me five copies to give away as well as a “Panic Break” gift basket which includes an electric “back” massager, a stress ball, an anti-stress bath soak, a meditation CD, Anne Taintor shot glasses, a Subversive Cross Stitch set and of course, the book!

I’ll be lazy and quote the back cover instead of attempting just tell you how funny the book is:

Babies. Maybe you’re thinking of having one. There might even be one inside you right now, draining nutrients from your system via a tube growing from its midsection. Or maybe you’ve already got one around the house, somewhere, and you’re responsible for its continued survival. You’re saddled with a a helpless being whom you’ve agreed to house and feed and love with all your heart for the rest of your life, more or less.

Either way, you’re confused, you’re frightened, and 911 won’t take your calls anymore. But don’t despair! Let’s Panic About Babies! is here to hold your hand and answer some important, age-old baby-related questions, including:

  • How can I be sure I’m pregnant? (Torso swells gradually until baby falls into underpants.)
  • Did I just pee myself? (Yes.)
  • What happens if I have sex curing my pregnancy? (Your baby will be born with a full, lush beard.)
  • How can I tell if I’ve chosen the wrong pediatrician? (He/she can’t pronounce “stethoscope.”)
  • How do I make sure my baby loves me back? (Voodoo.)

From the moment they’re created until the day they steal our cars, our babies demand center stage in our lives. So join Alice and Eden as they tell you (and your lucky partner!) exactly what to think and feel and do, from morning sickness to baby’s first steps. They know everything!

Ok, if you’d like to enter to win a copy or the fabulous gift basket please leave a comment with this post. The fine print applies, and with my deep apologies I have to tell you that prizes can only be sent to the US or Canadian addresses. I’ll let the Random Number Generator choose the winners at noon, PST on Friday, March 4th. Good luck!

Done! Congratulations to Angela, Jenn, Sarah, Eugenia, Wylie and Patti!

    HILARIOUS! :-)

  • 37 Ruth Ann // Mar 1, 2011 at 6:06 am

Oooo…this would make an amazing baby shower book for those showers for first children where men are included and the dad-to-be ends up opening up endless packs of diapers and breast pumps and little onsies and has that look on his face that “I know this will come in handy but I have no idea what it’s for but I really better go ‘awhh…how cute/sweet/thoughtful/useful…or something just so my wife doesn’t give me “that look” and make my life miserable on the drive home’”.
And, since I have multiple friends pregnant with their first kid, I may have to buy in bulk.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  • 38 Linda J // Mar 1, 2011 at 6:16 am

  • 76 Heather // Mar 1, 2011 at 7:20 am

Oh dear do babies freak me out. We are getting very, very, very close to that oh-so-important time of deciding to have offspring. It’s so exciting and scary and nerve-racking all at the same time. It’s something I’ve planned, hoped for for a very, very long time. But now that I’ve gotten to this point…I ask myself…Am I really an adult? What just happened? Oh geez!

But then I see all, and I mean ALL, of my friends have babies and I’ve never seen them happier. Makes me feel out of “the club”. And makes me want to become a member.

So, I’m only a worthwhile individual if/when I have a baby? I always heard it was when I had a man in my life, and now it’s a kid?

Look, we live in the 21st century. Please, gain some perspective and grow up. Having a child, or a man, in your life is not what makes one worthwhile. What makes one worthwhile is the sum of all that person does for good, and not whether or not they are reproducing.

I really wish people would quit their preaching that marriage and kids is all it takes for you to be worthwhile. Because if that is the case, then you’ve just discounted Mother Theresa, and other famous women who didn’t have children. And I think they’re very much worthwhile individuals. As am I.
