giveaway: How to Cook Everything iPhone App

How To Cook Everything app

To celebrate the release of Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything App for the iPhone Culinate would like to give away a version to five of you lucky, lucky readers. Quoting from their web page: “Everything you love about the cookbook: 2,000 recipes and recipe variations; 400 how-to illustrations; hundreds of menu ideas; and Mark Bittman’s straightforward cooking advice for simple good food.” It has every single recipe from the book, how cool is that? I use the How to Cook Everything book regularly so I’m very excited that I’ll have it available on my iPhone, especially when I’m standing in the store wondering what to make for dinner.

Just a note: If you don’t want to wait to see if you’ve won, the app is currently $1.99 at a special price, I don’t know how much it will cost later on. update: Also, the kind people at Culinate tell me that there will be a future app just for the How to Cook Everything Vegetarian book. They also report they are working on an iPad specific version of the HTCE app.

If you’d like to win a free app, please leave a comment with this post. If you’d like something to mention in the comment I’d love to know if you have a favorite Bittman recipe, either from HTCE or from his The Minimalist column in the NY Times. Obviously you’ll need to have an iPhone or iPod touch to take advantage of this one. The usual fine print applies. You’ll be chosen by the Random Number Generator, and I’ll get in touch if you’ve been chosen. You have between right now and Wednesday, April 21st at noon, PST to enter. Good luck! Comments are closed and the randomly chosen winners will be contacted shortly, thank you!

I have no idea who Mark Bittman is (I’m in the UK), but I love my iTouch and I’m always looking for cooking ideas to feed my two boys (hungry husband and picky toddler). Might be just the trick!

  • 6 Chris Anderson // Apr 19, 2010 at 3:34 am

This can only be topped by the forthcoming Cook’s Illustrated app in May. I bet that app will be free but require a monthly subscription. Any guesses?

  • 16 JenAgain // Apr 19, 2010 at 5:54 am

Now we can decide what to cook while still at the farmer’s market or grocery store!

HTCE is my favorite cookbook, hands down. Just got the red book after years with the white one! Would love the app for my new iph0ne. One of my favorite recipes is the cranberry ginger relish which I serve every Thanksgiving! Oh, and love this blog!

  • 22 Cynthia // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:08 am

His cranberry orange bread is delightful! I definitely use htce the most of all my cookbooks!

  • 25 eve // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:14 am

Having recipes & ingredient lists at my fingertips would be great. No more heading home to consult the book before buying groceries.

  • 26 ehme // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:19 am

I have put this cookbook on the get rid of pile so many times…and I have no idea why. It is the cookbook that I grab the most next to the Joy of Cooking. It would be awesome to have it right at my fingertips when I am looking for something to cook.

  • 27 Suzanne // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:28 am

  • 31 sarah // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:56 am

Just being able to decide what to eat while still at the shops or farmer’s market would be awesome.

  • 32 anastasiav // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:58 am

Bittman basically saved our CSA experience. Every week in our box there would be either something we had never had … off to Bittman to figure out a way to serve it, or something we had too much of (most recently: parsnips) … off to Bittman for some new ideas.

The iPhone app idea is genius and will make us much more adventurous cooks I have no doubt.

Love Mark Bittman! My current fave recipe of his is the chopped (salted) cabbage salad – so colorful, so delish!

  • 135 pawdua // Apr 19, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Never heard of them before but I just got an Ipod and am collecting cookbooks for it. Sounds really useful.

  • 137 Anne-Marie // Apr 19, 2010 at 1:53 pm

I would so love to win the app. I’m a huge fan of Tofu and am a big fan of the Tofu & Onions in a caramel sauce (it’s not really caramel – it’s more like an asian caramel). Thanks for the give away! =)

  • 138 Kat // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:06 pm

How excellent! I particularly enjoy the episode of The Minimalist where he teams up with Jamie Oliver, and they make a sauteed chicken dish. It’s tasty and my husband will eat it.

  • 139 Christi // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:12 pm

just used Bittman’s book last week to carmelize onions – love his suggestion to cook with a lid and no fat for the first 2o minutes

  • 145 A.M. // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:26 pm

oh man, I got the book at the library – and then flagged so many possible ideas that we were intimidated and I don’t think we made any of them. And then it was due back.

  • 147 anotherKate // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I love this cookbook and try new things out of it all the time, but my favorite recipe is hardly a recipe at all: the 1-hour roasted chicken.

“How to Cook Everything” has not failed me EVER! I’ve even tried some of the what I considered as questionable recipes, “really, peanut butter and kale?” , and they have always turned out to taste awesome. This will be such a handy tool at the store after work.

  • 153 Nancy // Apr 19, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Your right, this would be PERFECT for the grocery store. I’m constantly without a recipe!

The no-knead bread is a given… I’ll be trying his ginger rice w/egg soon.

  • 154 Candice // Apr 19, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Hmmm, thinking this would be a good one for my husband 1) since I don’t have an iPhone 2) I keep asking him to cook me something once in a while, maybe this would help. Fun, fun!

  • 155 megan // Apr 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

  • 224 Brigid // Apr 20, 2010 at 2:55 pm

My favorite bits from HTCE(V): Celeriac with Lentils, because it was tasty and because I had no idea what to do with that knotty bulb the first time I got one in my CSA bag; and the section on how to fry foods, because fried goods are transformed from tasty but kinda gross bar snacks to pure happiness when you make them at home. And oh, The Minimalist, how I love it so…

  • 225 Courtney // Apr 20, 2010 at 4:07 pm
