giveaway: Creature Crochet

Creature Crochet

I’m happy to let you all know that Kristen Rask (she who owns Schmancy and curates the annual Plush You! show) has a new book (it’s a kit too) coming out in mid-September called Creature Crochet. To celebrate she is giving away a copy to one lucky reader. I got a look at the copy she brought to the summer UCU but, sadly, wasn’t able to rip it own and play with the yarn inside.

To enter simply leave a comment with this post. If you want you can tell us the creature-centric crochet project you’ve ever taken on, or if you’ve never crocheted in your life. The Fine Print applies. I’ll be closing comments and letting the random number generator choose a winner around 10 am on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd, PST, so you’ve got a week to enter, good luck!

I’ve never crocheted in my life, but these cute critters make me want to give it a try! I do knit, but always have to limit myself to small projects as I like immediate gratification. I’ll never finish a sweater…but a fish I can probably handle.

  • 2 Amanda // Aug 26, 2009 at 7:48 am

    I haven’t crocheted anything since I was a little girl! I wonder if I’ll remember how…

  • 3 deborah // Aug 26, 2009 at 8:01 am

I would love to make the orange fish. I can crochet a little bit.

  • 4 Allison // Aug 26, 2009 at 8:02 am

I made a white crocheted “teddy bear” for my daughter when I totally didn’t know what I was doing, and the gauge was wrong — it ended up looking like a mummy. So now it’s just a weird voodoo-doll looking thing. Perhaps with Creature Crochet I would have better luck? I’ve crocheted more successful blankets and scarves since then.

  • 5 Steffy // Aug 26, 2009 at 8:10 am

I can’t crochet (yet, I’m dying to learn) but my friend does, and even if I don’t win this book, I’m planning to buy this for her as a birthday gift. LOVE!

  • 6 Amy // Aug 26, 2009 at 8:11 am

I’m in the middle of making a monster.. it’s just really 3 balls that are connected with a scary mouth. It’s the first animal I’ve ever made but I’m really excited about. I love making little creatures, so I figured I would start with monsters because who doesn’t love monsters?

I just learned how to crochet and all I’ve done is a doll blanket for my daughter. I’d love to learn to make wee little animals!

  • 20 Elis // Aug 26, 2009 at 9:04 am

Oh, awesome! Right now I am a half-decent hooker of hats, and last year I ventured into 3D territory by trying to make a set of crocheted ornaments (like the old glass balls, but with yarn). I very much want to make that hedgehog.

  • 21 Sandra // Aug 26, 2009 at 9:05 am

I’ve never tried before, but I’d love to learn how!

  • 22 drcarrie // Aug 26, 2009 at 9:06 am

I love crochet. The last (and first, I think) animals I crocheted were a pair of (small) squid. I loved the way their little tentacles curled up.

  • 33 Vanessa Nicolaysen // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:20 am

My sister taught me how to crochet when we were in college together. I started an afghan, but have never finished it- that was 11 years ago ;) My sister passed away almost 5 years ago and so I probably won’t ever finish it without her showing me how to do all the different steps.

  • 34 Kat // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:44 am

Oh! I’ve been wanting to learn to crochet little things like these. I keep looking at instructions online, then chickening out. I hope I win! Thanks for the contest!

  • 35 Gretchen // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:44 am

I have crocheted two octopi and four bunnies (three on my trip to Africa over the winter for the children of friends there). I love how quick and easy crochet animals are for projects!

  • 37 Theresa // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:44 am

  • 38 Jamie G // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:45 am

I have never crocheted anything, and I think the fact that someone originally found out that yarn could be woven into 3-d things is amazing.

Thanks for the chance for me to win continual amazement!

  • 39 jen // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:46 am

so cute! i’d love to make any of these!

  • 40 L // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:46 am

  • 45 Marianne // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:48 am

When I first was learning to crochet (I was trying to make coasters) I accidentally made a little sombrero, which topped a bottle of wine in the cupboard for a long time…I think I need some instruction and cuter results! This books looks awesome :-)

  • 46 Ayse // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:48 am

I crocheted a very lumpy obese sheep once. Since then I’ve been struggling with making my little crocheted animals be a bit more cute and a bit less weird looking.I could definitely use some guidance.

  • 60 pam // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:57 am

i don’t crochet (unless you count using my crochet hook to save a dropped stitch while knitting a scarf), but have always wanted to because of the cute little creatures you can make! the amigurumi books with the cutest creatures are usually in japanese, so i’m excited about this kit!

  • 61 Andi // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:57 am

I crochet mostly purses and scarves, but never something so cute!!

  • 62 Susan // Aug 26, 2009 at 10:59 am

  • 67 Ruth Ann // Aug 26, 2009 at 11:13 am

I’ve never crocheted anything other than a few stitches when my mom was doing something and I expressed some interest. But I quickly lost interest. I think a lot of that was because Mom was making boring things like scarves and sweaters. But, if I could make cute little critters, I think I’d enjoy that a lot more. This book looks like a great way to get started.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  • 81 Aimee // Aug 26, 2009 at 11:27 am

I re-learned to crochet earlier this year, have made a bunch of pot holders and two blankets. I’ve knitted toys before, mostly dolls and play food for my daughter. I’ve wanted to make critters, though, but haven’t made the plunge yet!

  • 116 Nicole // Aug 26, 2009 at 12:46 pm

When asked to contribute to my kid’s treasure box, I’ve always wanted to add something hand made but could never take myself away from my other more “practical” projects to do so. This book seems like it would help.

  • 117 Tara* // Aug 26, 2009 at 12:47 pm

I’m still trying to figure out where to put the hook into the existing row, when I’m on the second row. So far all I can do is one long skinny chain. Luckily, I have friends who crochet and are willing to put up with my knitting-oriented brain! That said, these little guys are adorable! They are definitely inspiring me to work on my crocheting skills.

I actually saw these cute little bear amigurumis and I had to try it. I followed an amigurumi how-t book but mine needed a lot more practice than that. They were fun anyways.

  • 122 Seanna Lea // Aug 26, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I would request that you pick me. I saw the cute little hedgehog on the box and I think I will need to make that for all of my single friends to remind them that the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

  • 123 Merry // Aug 26, 2009 at 1:10 pm

So cute! My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, and she made me the cutest little crochet butterflies. I tend more towards scarves and blankets since I’m not that creative, so I’d love to win this and learn to make some little critters. I really love the hedgehog!

  • 124 Elizabeth // Aug 26, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Crochet and hedgehogs — two of my favorite things. Me, please!

  • 144 kelli // Aug 26, 2009 at 2:42 pm

I once started making a bear. I started and finished a strawberry. And I used to make clothes for my teddy bears when I was a kid.

  • 145 Michelle // Aug 26, 2009 at 2:47 pm

I’m just learning to crochet, and started off, with all things, a sweater. D’oh! But I have knit for years. Who would have thought that trying to negotiate one hooked needle, four cats, a hedgehog and a 5-year-old boy who likes to “help” would be such a challenge?? If only I could crochet him a small animal to keep him occupied…I wonder how I could get a copy of this book???

  • 146 Adrianna // Aug 26, 2009 at 2:51 pm

A crochet beaver?! That’s awesome! Time to branch beyond crocheting blankets and pot-holders…

  • 147 chez shoes // Aug 26, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Cute! Oh yes, please. The only critter I’ve ever crocheted is an owl, and I think I need more crocheted critters in my life.

  • 148 JachiCue // Aug 26, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I really have only made blankets and scarves. You know, the normal straight, flat, beautifuly easy stuff. I’m anxious to venture out.

I’ve been a crocheter since my early 20s. Generally I make baby afghans for my friends who are having little ones, but I have made a stuffed sheep that turned out pretty well. This book looks fantastic, and since my odds of winning it are looking pretty minuscule, I’ll have to pick up a copy when it is published!

    Thanks!

  • 277 Carly // Aug 27, 2009 at 4:32 pm

In high school, I crocheted a big green teddy bear – his fur came from this very loopy crochet stitch. It was a birthday gift for a boyfriend. I don’t still have the boyfriend but it would be nice to still have the bear. :-)

  • 278 Erin // Aug 27, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Would love to try these, thanks!

  • 279 Brooke // Aug 27, 2009 at 4:58 pm

  • 280 Lady in a Smalltown // Aug 27, 2009 at 5:09 pm

I knit, but my sister crochets. I think this would be a great project for me to learn on and her to improve her skills. I may add it to my amazon.com wishlist when I don’t win. (I never win.)

  • 294 jaycee ess // Aug 27, 2009 at 11:49 pm

I’m working on a domokun doll, about 18 inches tall. I’m making up the pattern as I go along, but I can’t figure out how to do his arms!

    this book would help!

  • 295 Maria P // Aug 28, 2009 at 4:44 am

My husband dared me to crochet him skimpy thong underwear. The deal: if I make ‘em, he wears ‘em. I’d love to win this kit so I can put off making (and seeing) the inevitable! :-) Regardless, love your site!

  • 296 Abril // Aug 28, 2009 at 8:06 am

  • 297 Payal // Aug 28, 2009 at 8:57 am

  • 298 Mary // Aug 28, 2009 at 9:25 am

I would like to learn how to knit better and crochet! Can do both a little bit. Years ago I made a Raggedy Ann Family. I kit might help motivate me to try other projects.

  • 301 Elaine // Aug 28, 2009 at 10:45 am

I tried to learn how to crochet when I was home recouping from my tonsillectomy. Perfect, I thought, I’ll have all this free time. I underestimated how much the prescribed codeine pain killer would handicap my ability to count, read, sit up straight, hold my arms up or stay awake.

  • 306 Jean Della Vecchia // Aug 28, 2009 at 12:53 pm

  • 349 Qzer // Aug 31, 2009 at 9:31 am

I don’t crochet, but I do knit, and I’ve been sort-of-planning to learn to crochet for years. I like to knit and felt creatures — my biggest creature project so far was a “vegan fox” stole that I made a few years ago: adorable. More info on that here:

    http://www.fuzzygalore.biz/knitting.shtml

A crochet creature kit might be the impetus I need to put my crochet hook to use!
