Not Martha

some happy news

Scott and I are getting married! We’ve been together for ten years so this comes as a surprise to absolutely nobody. Still, we’re outrageously happy. The ring above is my engagement ring, the story involves a late night search, a bubblegum machine and a single quarter.

And of course I will be keeping a separate blog about our plans, if you’re interested please join me over at Planning To Elope.

    hey, congrats!
As a gloriously happy member of a 10 year partnership myself, I want to congratulate you on your pending reprieve from getting totally screwed on taxes (and health care, insurance, legal rights, etc.) every year!

How wonderful! Warmest congratulations to you both! What a completely charming ring. (Email me if you want any info about people who worked on our wedding.)

yea! as a recent bride myself, i learned as part of my obessive wedding reseach that we’re supposed to give the bride our “best wishes” and say “congratulations” to the groom. i don’t even want to dwell on the origins of this distinction. i say best wishes & congratulations to you both!

Hey, congratulations! I’m also getting married this year (September) so I look forward to reading your wedding blog posts. It’s really difficult to find ones that don’t just cater to advertisers and that whole awful “you need this ridiculous thing or your day will be RUINED!” bridal mag mentality!

    Congratulations!

My mother and step father have been married (and pretty happy!) for nearly 30 years. My step brother got their rings for .25 out of a gumball machine. Here’s hoping the same for you.

  • 40 maya // Mar 3, 2009 at 11:21 am

Congratulations! Also, I totally support your pseudo-eloping — it’s the best. My husband and I eloped (if you can call it that) to where my parents were living while my dad was on sabbatical and got married there. An adventure and a wedding in one tasty package. Have a ball! And I love love love the BCBG dress. Accept no substitutes.

  • 41 hilary // Mar 3, 2009 at 11:26 am

Congrats! There’s some lovely bridal knitting on ravelry…

  • 42 meaghan // Mar 3, 2009 at 11:28 am

As we needed a quick wedding (hubby went to Iraq) and didn’t want to compete with my sister’s wedding, we “eloped” to Vegas and it was the best thing we could’ve done! Had 80 people, a reception, a ten minute ceremony, dancing…a perfect combo of traditions, speedy planning, fun and price. Good luck with the planning!

  • 43 Min Jung // Mar 3, 2009 at 11:37 am

Wondeful news and good for you eloping. My fiance tried to convince me to do the same. 5 weeks till the wedding. I’m kind of wishing we’d decided to go that way.

  • 53 Kari // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Wow, as someone who’s been with my SO for a while and not married very long, I can understand the surprise! It’s a wonderful kind of joy, and it’s so nice of you to share it with us!

Plus, I adore your ring! It reminds me of Samantha Mathis in a movie with River Phoenix and Dermot Mulroney. River finds a pink heart ring in a coin machine and pops the question the night before they’re planning on marrying at Graceland. Wish I could remember the name! They dance to Elvis’ “Fools Rush In,” after their gas station ceremony, and my heart melts.

Congratulations and very best wishes to you both!!!

  • 54 cheryl // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Also, you are brilliant to elope.

  • 56 Kate F. // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Oh, and word on Kvetch. I had a pretty formal 110 person wedding and Kvetch saved my sanity and my budget. Awesomeness.

  • 57 laura // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:21 pm

    Congratulations and best wishes!

  • 58 megan // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Syd – We’ve hear from a lot of people who had big weddings and they all say eloping is good idea, but not one of them regrets having a wedding despite the amount of work that went into it. Hang in there, you’ll have a great time.

And thanks to everybody for the wishes!

  • 59 susan // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Congratulations!! Love your ring (I wore a $4 Claire’s plastic thing for the first month and a half of my engagement, and I’m still quite emotionally attached to it), and I’m so glad that the decision is bringing such joy to both of you.

  • 60 Seanna Lea // Mar 3, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Congrats! I liked the wedding magazines. They weren’t thrifty or even useful, but they were completely snarkworthy. Good for a laugh after a long hard day!

Congratulations! When we got married 20 years ago I said that I was going to write an article called “If I knew then what I know now, I would have eloped!” So eloping sounds like a plan :-)) All that being said, I did enjoy my wedding, but it was A LOT of work and $$$$$$$$.

  • 80 Abby // Mar 3, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Congratulations! I don’t regret my wedding for one moment – it was full of my own special touches – but I truly believe that what makes a bride happy is to have exactly what she wants. If an elopement is that for you – go for it. You’ll have a blast no matter what!

  • 87 megan // Mar 3, 2009 at 2:39 pm

Natalie – Nope. It’s just that before this we never lived in the same house for more than a year and a half, which meant we were always recovering from moving or getting ready to move. We’re settled, at least for the moment, in once spot so it seemed like a good time.

Ha. Love the ring. At three years, my husband and I realized that everytime we sat down to plan the wedding, it got pushed back further and further. Finally when it had been pushed back a year and a half in one sitting, we decided to say screw it. We pulled a wedding together in two weeks, 50 people, had it my parents’ backyard. It was a lot of fun, though quite a few people didn’t make who I wish could have. Ah well! I hope you two have fun with your wedding.

I’ve been with my boyfriend for eight years now, and that gives me hope. He has been mentioning things here and there, so perhaps I’ll be a bb soon enough.

Mazel Tov! I just wanted to point you towards an etsy site I’ve recently become obsessed with-they have really beautiful (and reasonably priced) rings that could totally work for a wedding ring (I’d do it if I were engaged….or dating…..:))

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6258539 (SinglebBeautiful is the name of the store)

Also, you could post on etsy for someone to make a replica of your ring in a precious metal…..

    again, congrats!

Thank you thank you thank you to you all, it means a lot to me!

  • 184 Ami // Mar 8, 2009 at 1:48 pm

My husband proposed to me with a ring identical to that one! I still have it, it’s very precious to me. We will be celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary on May 22nd.

I was told by a couple that was married over 50 years that the secret to a successful marriage is compromise and never ever lay down to sleep angry with each other. So far, so good :)

  • 185 Suzy // Mar 9, 2009 at 2:03 pm
