good lip balm, recommended with reservations

From left to right we have:

#1: Labello Caregloss & Shine lip balm from Canada that I bought last year and loved so much because it was conditioning and glossy and didn’t have a strong taste. This was apparently replaced because the next year when we went to Victoria all I could find was

#2 Nivea Caregloss & Shine. This was very similar but the formula had gained a cloying sweetness and the flavor of apricots. This still works really well but I just cannot put up with the flavor for very long. However I was pleased to recently find it being sold at my local Walgreens as

#3 Nivea A Kiss of Shine. This is exactly the same as the tube of #2 from Canada, I bought it hoping it wouldn’t be so sweet but no luck. Still, I’m really glad to see more Nivea lip products in the US since I’ve become a fan of them in the last year or so. I found these in a display that held lip glosses as well lip balms:

And the Nivea site has a list of stores where you’ll be able to find them soon.

Next on my quest for a good lip gloss that isn’t terribly sweet, I’ve been advised to seek the Shiseido glosses.

My issue with lip glosses is not so much the flavor, but the stickiness…are these sticky or fairly smooth/slick?

  • 2 Rachel // Aug 19, 2008 at 8:56 am

Ah, I love Labello. My husband brought me back every variety he could find when he went to Germany last. I’m in stock for at least 2 years :)

No CareGloss and shine right now but, if we go back soon, I’ll contact you and send you some.

Bertha – The Nivea glosses are sticky, but the balms are not. I’m a bit unusual in my tolerance for sticky glosses, I like the way they feel.

Rachel – Thanks! Though, I’m not holding out hope that they didn’t sweeten and flavor all the glosses they sell. In the realm of my lip products things were good there for a year or so.

Try Clinique Superbalm moisturizing gloss. It’s great and there is no flavor.

I’m glad these are coming out in the states. I still have a tube I bought in Shanghai years ago and it works fine. I like how go on smoothly, but aren’t that sticky or thick.

[…] too late and I was kicking myself for not buying more lip balm while I had the chance. Today via Not Martha I learned that Nivea Lip Care products will be available soon (no date as to when) at a bunch of […]

Mindy – Thank you for the tip, I’m looking at reviews at Makeupalley and it looks fantastic.

I got some Nivea SOS balm from They had their other glosses, too. On sale, even! Also picked up the Touch of shine, the flavor doesn’t bother me and I love that it’s not sticky.

My favourite all-time lip balm is the Body Shop cocoa butter lip balm. It really softens, you don’t have to reapply every 5 minutes and it doesn’t have any flavour added apart from the natural cococa butter taste which is vaguely chocolate-y but not distractingly so.

Also worth trying: Sephora brand lip gloss. There is a tiny, tiny hint of sweet to it if you’re looking for it, I guess, but I would consider it pretty flavorless. The color I have looks like a dark burgundy in the tube but goes on with a really nice sheer hint of color that doesn’t make my lips crazily pink.

Kate F – Thanks, I’ll try those too. The last time I went around Sephora looking at lip glosses it was ages ago and all the brands smelled heavily of cake batter. I never bothered to check on them again, so I’ll give them another try.

I’m SO glad Nivea’s lip balms are coming back to the U.S.!! They used to sell them here, then they stopped, and I would have to stock up on Labello whenever I went to Europe. The only other lip balm I’ve liked almost as well was Neutrogena (and it is the only one with SPF I’ve ever been able to tolerate), and I think they’ve stopped making it.

Must come out of lurkdom to announce to all interested parties that Labello is easily available on the internet. Amazon has quite a few flavors at reasonable prices. No need to travel or wait for Nivea to get it right; you can get the real deal sent right to your door.

I am a hard-core Chanel fan. Beautiful colors, beautiful wear, beautiful everything. And no scent or taste. I’ve been using them exclusively since I started wearing them about 5 years ago.

Chanel’s Glossimer lip glosses! I haven’t found another one that I like as much.

I’m a total lip balm addict. My faves are Weleda everon lip balm (for its matte-ness and staying power), Rosebud Salve (also works on and burns), Philosophy Kiss Me, and Kiehl’s lip balm #1.

T – This is true but the prices on Amazon are very high, especially for ones marked with the Labello label instead of Nivea. I think it’s worth waiting for them to appear in US stores. You can find them for sale at for far less than Amazon right now, though Amazon is selling them in packs of 6.

I wanted to make a correction about the Clinique gloss. The one I have I got as a sample size and on the back it says “Grapefruit”, but honestly I can’t taste anything!

I have become a huge fan of Mary Kay’s Satin Lips line. I have a tendency to get cold sores, and since using the lip scrub once a week and the lip balm maybe 2-3 times a day I’ve gone from getting cold sores 1-2 times a month to 1-2 times a year. I also use a lot less balm than I used to and don’t notice a smell or a flavor.

I also hate sickly sweet smelling lip products and happen to like their line of lightly tinted lip gloss. It’s not as sticky as some I’ve tried and there is no noticeable smell or taste 5 minutes after its applied.

Try Aveda lip glosses. They taste kinda minty (yum), have some great colours and last a long time. They are a bit more expensive than the drugstore brands but I find the colour lasts several hours and I don’t have to reapply very often. I’m a lip balm junkie and am always on the lookout for good lip products.

Labello products are readily available here in Canada (I’m in Vancouver) – if there’s something in particular you’d like to try I could easily send you some!

I found the Shiseido gloss too watery and light, but I love love love their makeup. I like the bobby brown gloss and the Revlon one (I think) you recommended recently.

  • 22 Michelle // Aug 19, 2008 at 11:01 am

Second Kate F’s recommendation. I’m not much of a lip gloss wearer (I hate the sticky) but I got a freebie tube of the Sephora brand lip gloss several months ago and I really like it.

It gives a nice shine without being either gooey or sticky. And I don’t recall there being much of a taste or fragrance, either.

  • 23 Emma // Aug 19, 2008 at 11:28 am

I’m with Mindy. I got a sample of the Superbalm from Clinique and I love it. Pretty much flavourless, and not goopy.

  • 24 Ashley // Aug 19, 2008 at 11:47 am

I still have to go on record as a fan of Kiehl’s lib balm. It is flavorless and odorless and very emollient.

For a little bit of color, I recently discovered that the new Loreal Bare Naturelle moisturizing lip gloss is also flavorless and odorless.

Strangely, flavored lip glosses trigger migraines for me so I can vouch for my lip balm addiction and being headache free!

I’m stuck on good ol’ Burt’s Bees. That stuff is magic – it will cure your red nose from too much blowing and any matter of other ailments.

When I want more of a gloss I go for my good ol’ Juicy Tubes.

Have you tried Mac’s clear lipglass? I can’t stand flavoured lipglosses but this one works for me – it has no taste at all, and isn’t sweet. Since it also lasts for ages, gives just the right level of gloss without looking too ‘ooh! shiny!’, and isn’t expensive, I thought I’d mention it!

My all time favourite balm that I use every day and go through quicker than hot dinners is the Body Shop Vitamin E Balm, it has SPF 15 and leaves your lips soft even after the actual residue has disappeared, they way you would hope your facial moisturiser worked. It has no scent/flavour at all either.

I agree with the positive feedback for the Clinique superbalm. I LOVE this stuff. I purchases a gift pack a few years ago that was around christmas, and recently they’ve come out with more “colors”. I say that because there is really very very little color, just a great texture and great shine, but not too much. And it really heals my super chapped lips when I go on chapstick hiatis.

Smith’s rosebud salve, is my favorite lip balm. they carry is at sephora. It has a slight scent, but not cloying or sugary. I love it.

Have you ever tried MAC lip conditioner? It’s sold in both a pot and a tube. I prefer the tube, as it is a bit thinner. It’s creamy, not sticky. i think there might be a hint of vanilla flavor (there is in most of the lip products), but it’s not sweet.

OK…just following up to say that I bought the Nivea Kiss of Shine (pink squeezy tube) and the Kiss of Moisture balm (in the blue tube). The Kiss of Shine is kinda sweet and funny tasting, but I love that it’s not too sticky. Overall a decent gloss. LOVE the Kiss of Moisture balm. Smooth like buttah and no stickiness! Thanks so much for the heads up on Nivea lip products!

Have you tried lip tints? I make five varieties. They aren’t as heavy as a lipstick and not as sticky as a lip gloss.
