I’m a fairly short woman (5’2″), and my feet dangle from almost every chair (pew, bench, sofa, car seat) I sit in. This is uncomfortable and occasionally painful, and I’ve taken to sitting cross-legged everywhere, which is also uncomfortable and occasionally painful. What are my options? at Ask Metafilter. Me too! One commenter here mentions a something I plan for carefully, a carry on bag for airplanes that can act as a foot rest.

    Ha! That last one cracked me up, as I sit here at my desk shifting around in the different positions described in the Metafilter thread. I sit cross-legged whenever I can get away with it too.

    I sit cross legged ALL THE TIME. People at work think I am nuts. But I am only 4’10″ so my feet don’t touch the ground even in my “petite” office chair. On airplanes I always prop my laptop bag up as a foot rest. I have thought a lot about some sort of inflatable foot rest (something like this weird giant pillow) that I can use because MAN do my legs hurt after a while.

    A friend of a friend wrote that morning person/night owl article for Slate. I knew it wasn’t for me when she mentioned that sleeping until 10 am was her breaking point. I am too far gone as a night owl for that article.

    For foot rests, you can also bring an inflatable beach ball, which you inflate most of the way but not all and use as a foot rest.

    I had this problem to the point where I hurt my shoulder from the poor posture and ended up with constant tingling in my shoulder. I had to go to physical therapy and discovered that my poor posture while seated was to blame. My PT said it was not uncommon for women my size. One thing she has given me that is very helpful is a McKenzie Roll. I use it at my desk and it has helped A LOT.
