cooking:
chili chicken
This recipe from My Feasts more than satisfied my craving for something spicy and I got to cook with dried chilies for the first time. Found on TasteSpotting.
deciding:
on a color for throw pillows
I need new pillows for a dark gray couch (ok, futon) but I have not decorated the room at all, so I'm having trouble figuring out what color to get. Different shades of gray perhaps? Uh.
browsing:
Alchemy
Etsy's service where customers request something and Etsy sellers put bids in on the work, it's fascinating. I have found a few thing I've always wanted as well.
watching:
Family Guy Blue Harvest
When this aired we were watching it in an empty middle-of-nowhere hotel bar and a few guys on staff wandered in to watch it with us. This memory is not as bleak as I've made it sound.
popping:
sour gummi bear vitamins
Apparently I'm so much more likely to remember a daily vitamin if I'm pretending I'm six years old.

I'm really not a fan of the color pink, but bright pink really pops on dark gray, moreso than any other color (imo). If you have the decor (or the stomach) to handle bright pink accents, that's what I'd go with.

Ah, I would do pink but I'm afraid Scott might not be so into it.

I totally love the look of aqua colors with gray!!

I would go with a rich cream color on the pillows. That way, when you do decorate the room, you can put a coordinating color pillow to tie it all together and still keep the cream.

I think a lot of colors work really well with gray. And coincidentally I have a grey futon couch, you can see my pillow here.

We eat the TJ's gummy vites every morning.
As for your cushions. In the past I have gone to Cost Plus, bought two napkins, sewn them together as a pillow slipcover and changed things for different seasons.
I would love to get a grey futon cover to replace our Residence Inn type of patterned moss green that we have in my study. Did you buy the cover somewhere local?

Nazilam - We're currently using a fitted flannel sheet. We keep meaning to replace it with something more official looking, but it's so soft and perfect for flopping down and watching movies. Also it's washable for the inevitable popcorn spills. I secretly hope to find a cotton flannel couch to replace it.

Audrey - Very nice! I considered the oh-so-current gray and yellow palette but I'm afraid my carpet won't allow it.

what about a lovely dark orange? when I read your futon was gray I immediately thought of your wonderful combination of orange zipper/ zipper charm + gray cardi!

Orange cushions!
Live on the wild side a little ;)

We have a couch that looks dark gray in some lights and dark chocolate in others and I have been looking for throw pillows for it for ages. I have to force myself away from the yellow/orange/coral combinations that I am drawn to because then my whole living room looks like the seventies.
I love the pillows from Anthropologie but I can't bring myself to spend $100 on a pillow...I was thinking of trying to make this:
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=76301&navAction=jump&search=true
maybe it will go on sale.
There are some that might work at CB 2 though, thanks for the link. And you never know, sometimes Target has nice pillows.

I considered orange but our dining room wall is orange, as are our kitchen gadgets, so I think I need a new colors.
I might go with the aqua Laura suggested above.

I'm with MadCarlotta - my first thought was ORANGE.
Comment by Emy — March 24, 2008 @ 10:55 am
Aqua and orange against a dark grey is a really great colour scheme.
Comment by MadCarlotta — March 24, 2008 @ 11:12 am
i would go with white or off-white pillows that had multi-colored embroidery or patterns on them that included grey but also other colors, so you have options when u try coordinating other things in the room with them.

First of all, I think from all the comments you must have picked up that no one is going for the gray pillows on gray futon [hey! I used to have a gray flannel sheet on my futon couch too]. Pillows are a great and inexpensive way to see what colors you'd like for the rest of the room. Have you seen yarnplay at home? She made a throw in dark gray and dark purple and it looked fab. So if you don't want pillows that pop so much maybe you could do a rich jeweltone like that. And I love the pillow slipcovers made from napkins idea!

Sadly, I am also more likely to eat vitamins in Gummi Bear form. I have one that's a multivitamin, and one that's calcium.
41 going on seven.

the only was I used to get my ex-bf to take vitamins was by buying him children's vitamins. So I know you're not alone :)

Wow - you can match anything to go with your grey flannel. I am a big fan of green anything.
Comment by Sarah — March 24, 2008 @ 2:40 pm
I'm thinking a lime green would be a nice contrast with the orange wall and would perk up the grey sofa a little. The shades of grey pillows just seem a little dull to me when you look at that fantastic orange wall.
Comment by Suze — March 24, 2008 @ 3:42 pm
Oh, I didn't specify: the dining room wall is not seen from the room where the futon is, so there is no need to coordinate with the orange wall. But, the house is small so I didn't want to have too much orange.
Comment by megan — March 24, 2008 @ 3:56 pm
I like the lime green or aqua idea.

What color are the walls and carpeting? That plays a big factor since just about any color goes with gray. I would take the opportunity to choose some prints though. Personally, I love a pale, pale lavender with deep gray.

i just recently painted my bedroom and dove grey, and basically the accent colour in my furnishings is shades of yellow.
it looks fantastic!
