Scott told me about this amazing clip from the film Before the Music Dies that shows the creation of a fake pop star. It goes like this: song written by a 45 year old guy + model who is not required to be able to sing + studio time + video footage = POP STAR!

I read an interview once with Neko Case where she claimed the only female musicians not using Auto-Tune were her and Nelly Furtado. Who knows if that’s true, but pretty interesting.

I was a music journalist for a while in Toronto..it’s stuff like this and having to deal with (some) A&R ppl that made me get out of it before I hated it.

I just came across this post (late to the party!) and I can say 100% yes – this is true. My friend is a sound tech for a major record label and he has done the sound mixing for almost all of the current pop tarts and other virtually talentless people and he has horror stories of these girls who legitimately CANNOT sing, can’t even get into the range for the auto-tune to correct it, so he has to record it note-by-note, sometimes word-by-word to get it right. It’s a horrible reflection of our musical culture… but also a damn fine living if you can get it! ;-)
