I have the Nikon D40 and I LOVE it! I was using a Canon point-and-shoot before and the difference in picture quality is amazing.

Forgot to mention that I bought my D40 because most of the photos I take are of my sheep and goats. The point-and-shoot I had didn’t have a fast enough shutter speed to get a picture before the animal I was shooting moved. I set it on sports mode when shooting the animals and it is wicked fast. You can see some of the pics I took with it here. http://www.marthasvineyardfiberfarm.com

If you want the D40, there’s really no reason to get the D40x — unless you’re going to make giant wall-sized prints, you don’t need the megapixels or the price increase.

I have a D80 and love it, but I wish I’d known the D40 was coming and waited for it — the differences between them aren’t things I care about as much as I care about saving $700.

I will have to join in with my love for the Nikon cameras. I have a D80 and absolutely love it.

As someone said in the Ask Metafilter link, this is really similar to the Pepsi versus Coke debate. Both Canon and Nikon make fine cameras. As you do research, you will find people who bought Canon have always been Canon fans – and those with Nikons have always had Nikons. There is an amazing brand loyalty among their owners.

One piece of advice – find a place where you can touch and hold them. Some find the controls on the Canon more accessible than the Nikons, and visa versa. I think it is important to like the feel of the camera. I have actually changed my mind about cameras based on how ackward they felt to me.

Thanks for the link! And for what it’s worth, I’m drooling over the Canon Rebel XTi. But that’s for no good reason :-). My friend has one and loves hers.

since i had a canon point and shoot I was amazed at the quality..It was really tough to decide between the nikon d40 and canon rebel xti….so I ended up with the canon rebel xti..i guess the loyalty came into play.

I just go the D40X bundle at Radio Shack with a two lens, camera case bundle. I’ve only played with it a bit but I am really happy so far. Good luck!

I have a Nikkon D70s and I like it very much…but it has the problem that bothered me with the film SLRs…it’s friggin’ heavy.

i have the canon xti, and i absolutely love it. i went through the same agonizing decision a year ago between the xti and the d80, and i’m so happy with my choice. but i definitely think that before anyone makes a choice, she should go to a store and hold both cameras in her hands–it makes a huge difference, and is a realy help with the decision.
