I admit I really wanted a slick salter scale but commonsense prevailed and I bought one of these at the independtly run discount kitchen store.
It was fine and worked very well both for cooking/baking and postage. Then I melted it by leaving it on top of the toaster oven.
But the proof of it's worth is that I immediately replaced it with a second Escali!

I didn't think I needed one either till I got one. It is amazing how useful it can really be to weigh out the ingredients instead of just measuring them (especially with brown sugar, etc). I got one and now I absolutely love it.

I have it in red. It was a gift from my mom, and one of those things that I didn't realize I needed until I now that I actually have it.

Interesting. Since technically I am allergic to shopping, if you can buy it at Target [or Amazon] it would certainly get my vote.
Cheers

Also useful for weighing yarn. You can use a scale to weigh your remaining skein (or your project-in-progress) and have a good idea of whether you'll have enough yarn, etc. Know what I mean?

I have a lime green one I bought to weigh my guinea pigs (my roommate has appropriated it for his current selling-DVDs-through-Amazon project) and it has been awesome. Cheap plastic, but it works.

I also have the bright orange one (my favorite color). I've had it about 2.5 years and it works great, the easy tare option is very useful. Highly recommended!

kitchen tip for my scale. I slip it in a gal size bag before measuring ingredients. As long as it is centered in the bag it won't change the weights and then if flour or liquid is spilled it doesn't get in the little spaces.
