needing:
Eton FR300 emergency radio
With a hand crank, flashlight, cell phone charger, and the ability to listen in on broadcast tv stations. Last week we had a very minor windstorm and half our neighborhood lost power, so I figure we’ll spend at least a few days this winter hand cranking our way to NPR. I admit I need this less to save me from lack of communications, and more to save me from boredom while I lack internet access. The Wall Street Journal called it the best emergency radio. Also, it comes in red and silver and orange.
carving:
pumpkins
I like to make pumpkins that are worried, Scott likes to make pumpkins that antagonize mine.
eating:
Minea Farm fruit leather
The plum is really good. Minea Farm makes cider on a century old press, it’s really good too.
desiring:
Maldon sea salt
We had used up the last of our old sea salt and the poached eggs this morning just weren’t as good.
sipping:
Blue Bottle coffee
The beans smell so good.

i bought an FR200 (in blue) a couple of years ago and it’s very handy. every once in awhile, i’ll crank it up and search for interesting short-wave stations.

The blue bottle coffee is so delicious, expecially when they make it for you in the alley-shack, as I like to call it.

Actually, that Eton radio comes in quite a few more colors if you get it from LL Bean.

I have that radio too…best purchase made in a LONG LONG time.
CBC (CDN equivalent to NPR) while camping….CBC during power outages…or CBC during my morning breakfast snack. ALL CBC…all the time. YAY

Marsha – Amazon carries all the Eton colors as well, I just like those three.
Samin – It was a gift a friend brought me all the way back, I owe her one.

[…] 11 June 2008 in Instant Lust My brothers and I (but mainly I) got this Eton FR300 Emergency Hand Crank Radio for my dad. I’d seen reviews for it online previously and thought it was very cool. I actually bought it at Sharper Image (never thought I’d buy anything there) because it was there, and on sale cheaper than anywhere online. The one thing I was concerned with was how the crank would work — if it was unnecessarily hard to turn, but it was surprisingly easy. Then I was skeptical when the radiolife/crank ratio wasn’t on the box, but when I called my brother he said that 90 seconds of turning should give the radio 1.5 hrs of play time. Another cool thing is that it can tune into TV audio. But the best part was my brother told me that the radio my dad had been using (when he goes fishing and random outdoor activities) is actually broken. It has ports for cell phone chargers, but the weird thing is that we have to get the cell phone adaptors from the manufacturers directly. It has an AC port too, but that has to be bought separately. Slightly off-putting, but I hope my dad likes it. The orange screams just emergency, doesn’t it? It was the only color. When I was looking for a picture to post up, I saw the red one and was really in love with it. But I don’t think I’d have gotten red for my dad …. Search for: […]
