It refers back to many events in the previous books, so it would be helpful. I really enjoyed this series - the first book (Eyre Affair?) was just ok, but I'm glad I kept going - all the rest of them have been great - smart and funny! I enjoyed the new Thursday Next - but it's been so long since I read the last one I wish I had gone back and read it first, just to refresh my memory.
