for·tu·itous
1 : occurring by chance
2 a : coming or happening by a lucky chance
2 b : Having in your possesion both The Baker's Edge pan and David Lebovitz's lovely, skinny The Great Book of Chocolate which just happens to contain a brownie recipe adapted from that of Katherine Hepburn.

The recipe was simple and oh so pleasurable to make. Did I tell you this is the first time I've made brownies? I finally get why they are a favorite to make for bake sales and picnics. So easy, and so loved by those eating them.

It looks like lava, delicious lava.

It came out all in one piece! Also: M for Megan. Or Mine, all mine.

It's like having dotted lines to follow.

Each piece was perfect.

The Baker's Edge pan was so nice and sturdy and very easy to clean. I used a wee spritz of Baker's Joy and the entire pan of brownies slid right out.
The Baker's Edge site has a whole bunch of recipes that I'm looking forward to trying including Friendship Bars from David Lebovitz, Cinq-Cinquiemes a la Pistache from Clotilde Dusoulier (Chocolate and Zucchini) and Blackberry Cobbler from Baking Bites.
The Baker's Edge pan was created by passionate people with a good idea and it's sold by their small company, so it's one of those all-around feel good products. You can read the story, and find out a bit more over at Clotilde's post. You can buy the pan at the Baker's Edge site, or over at Amazon.
Next they'll be offering a lasagna pan sized perfectly for boxed lasagna noodles.

I love making brownies from scratch - you get to choose the type and quality of chocolate (and other ingredients -- free range eggs, whole wheat pastry flour...) and they are so simple and yummy.
I must be a weirdo as I never like the edge pieces :) Just the squishy middle ones.

Ummm... they look soooo good... need one of those!

Nice to see brownies without the faddish and ruinous icing on top. And that pan ... so smart, so simple. End piece heaven.

I need a pan that bakes just middle brownies. Now perhaps you can share the recipe for those mouth watering brownies(?)...

I love the photos today. Very food porny. And now I'm totally drooling over the thought of a corner brownie of my own.

I want the pan too! And the milk glass! I looked for the glass on the Baker's Edge site, and couldn't find it. Nix for Amazon too.
Is it available to anyone? Or just people with famous blogs? :o)
Comment by Amy Lu — August 15, 2007 @ 7:00 am
I LOVE the glass!
Oh, and the brownies look pretty good too.

I've been making Katherine Hepburn's Brownies for at least 35 years, ever since I found the recipe in a magazine. Her directions crack me up: add vanilla and beat like mad! LOL

While you wait for the lasagna pan you can use your 8x8 pan and Barilla No-Bake Lasagne Noodles. The fit perfectly two across. I just halve have usual giant lasagna recipe and make two small ones. I also line the second pan with non-stick foil and freeze it uncooked. Once frozen I can lift it right out using the foil and bag it up for later. An 8x8 lasgna is perfect for my small family and I make two dinners at once!

Those look so yummy! I must get that pan!

oh , I want, I want, I want, thanks for the review. I've been eyeing this baby for awhile
Comment by Kristi — August 15, 2007 @ 7:34 am
Okay, you convinced me. I've been eyeballing it for a while, but now I had to get it! :D

Amy Lu - I'm not certain, and you made me blush.
Amy - Thanks for the tips Amy!
Comment by megan — August 15, 2007 @ 7:53 am
I bet you could use this for lasagne and each piece would have the lovely crispy edges that are my favorite part.
Comment by Sharon — August 15, 2007 @ 8:27 am
Sharon - The next product they are coming out with is a pan shaped just right for lasagna noodles, and you can use this one with smaller sized noodles, a friend let me know that Ronzoni sheets fit into this pan with a little trimming lengthwise.
Comment by megan — August 15, 2007 @ 8:59 am
Aha. Found the recipe here:

I like Amy's tip for the lasagna. While I don't like end-piece brownies, I love end-piece lasagna!
Comment by Miss Sassy — August 15, 2007 @ 9:03 am
I must do lemon bars in that pan.
Comment by Chelee — August 15, 2007 @ 9:43 am
Hooray, you've posted the photos. Thanks for sharing, now how about a brownie for the road? I'm thinking that apple crisp would be amazing in one of these puppies very soon...
Comment by lindsay — August 15, 2007 @ 11:01 am
Yum! Those brownies look delicious! Have got to get that pan! I kept seeing it around, but hadn't seen a "real person" actually use it until now. Thanks!
Comment by Sarah — August 15, 2007 @ 11:07 am
Like I said before. I LOVE this pan!
Comment by Karan — August 15, 2007 @ 11:32 am
where did you find the milk meter glass?
Comment by Jamie — August 15, 2007 @ 11:34 am
I love me a good brownie. I have GOT to get me one of those pans!
Comment by Meredith — August 15, 2007 @ 11:43 am
I'd love to know where you got the glass too. my friend LOVES brownies and her birthday is coming up. that would be a perfect present!
Comment by Kristin — August 15, 2007 @ 11:47 am
oh my, yum...drool...
Comment by carol — August 15, 2007 @ 12:19 pm
I emailed the company and received a reply from Emily at Baker’s Edge. Unfortunately the glasses aren’t currently for sale, but might possibly be made available for purchase during the holiday season. If you really like them you should probably drop them a line. It may sway the decision...
Comment by Erin — August 15, 2007 @ 12:34 pm
Oh my god, did the cute glass come with the pan?
I'm about to buy this....
Comment by nazilam — August 15, 2007 @ 12:40 pm
Nazilam - Unfortunately no, but if you read Erin's comment just above yours it looks like they might consider selling it.
Erin - Thanks for reporting back to us!

Is it weird that I TOTALLY want one of those pans even though my favorite brownies are the ones right from the center of the pan (where they're the least done)? ;)
Comment by Lindsay — August 15, 2007 @ 6:15 pm
These are gorgeous. That pan looks so fun.
Comment by ex.libris — August 16, 2007 @ 2:24 pm
I'm not even sure I like chocolate and those look pretty incredible to me.
I think my better half would love that pan.

I saw your first post about the brownie pan, and I ordered it right away! Glad that you got yours too, but I wasn't going to waste a time-consuming from scratch recipe on a test. Good for you, brave girl!
Comment by Julie — August 16, 2007 @ 5:40 pm
ack, that looks so amazingly delicious! too bad my oven is broken ;(
Comment by cindy@staged4more — August 16, 2007 @ 8:41 pm
Yum! I've never figured out how to make brownies that are crunchy on top without drying out in the middle. Share your secret! :P
I think I need that pan, although there is NO room in my current kitchen for new stuff. Also, the oven is gas, I haven't baked in it yet and I'm a bit scared to.
Comment by Sarah — August 17, 2007 @ 1:04 am
Sarah - These were my first batch, so I'm afraid I don't know!
Comment by megan — August 17, 2007 @ 7:23 am
[...] Surely by now you’ve heard of the Baker’s Edge pan? It’s been all over the internet, in more places than I can count. After much internal debate, I finally jumped in and ordered one. You can buy it from the site or from Amazon.com, but the prices are about the same so why not buy directly from the guys who worked so hard to make such a cool pan available to us edge lovers? [...]

Thank you! After seeing your delicious snaps I ordered the recipe book straight away. (Unfortunately I can't seem to order the Bakers Edge Pan in the UK)... however, the brownies went down a treat. I don't make many puddings from scratch, but these were amazingly easy and SO delicious! All my brownie friends now think I'm a brownie queen. xxxxx
